Soap Box Derby set for Liberty Lake park

The seventh annual Soap Box Derby race, sponsored by Gonzaga University’s Alumni Association and Spokane East Rotary, will be held July 19 in Liberty Lake Pavillion Park, on Molter Road between East Country Vista Road and Valley Way. The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with lunch at 11 a.m. Volunteers are still needed and special-needs children who are interested in racing are encouraged to sign up right away. U-Hi track standout Upmeyer finding success at EWU

Austin Upmeyer isn’t alone anymore and he likes the company. A 2013 University High graduate was one of the best sprinters in the state during his prep track and field career, placing second in the 400 meters at his final state Class 3A state meet and helping the 4-by-400 relay team to a seventh-place finish.

Valley council wrestles with stricter marijuana regulations

Justin Peterson wants to change the “sketchy” perception of the marijuana business, and he can’t do that from a strip mall. But if Spokane Valley goes beyond state law to restrict where recreational marijuana facilities can operate, Peterson, who expects to receive one of the three state-issued retail licenses allocated for the suburb, would have to move to one. It would be potentially the third location since he moved to his first location in November.

Audubon Park concerts begin tonight

The 16th annual series of Thursday Night Concerts Under the Pines at Audubon Park kicks off tonight with the Spokane Jazz Orchestra playing from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Victor Fraizer has been organizing the concerts on behalf of the Northwest Neighborhood Association since 2007. This year’s concerts continue on July 24 with Nobody Famous and on Aug. 7 with Men of Rhythm.

Entertainment Fireworks manager has blast lighting up skies

Last week was the busiest of the year for Rich Vaughan. He’s the eastern regional manager of Entertainment Fireworks, Inc., the company that created the Fourth of July shows for Riverfront Park and Coeur d’Alene, as well as more than 40 other shows throughout Eastern Washington and North Idaho. The company also does the home games for the Spokane Indians baseball team.

Gardening: Great garden started with logging project

When Lori and Brian Scott bought their South Hill home they inherited a forest of pine trees and little else for a yard. The pines blocked any sun from reaching the ground and the tree roots used up the available water such that nothing else would grow. “It was a train wreck to say the least,” said Brian Scott.

Perry neighbors seek traffic help

 The South Perry District is often used as a good example of successful neighborhood development. Restaurants and businesses have filled almost every available storefront in the dedicated business corridor over the past 10 years.  The business boom has brought in a lot of traffic to the chagrin of some neighbors, including 20-year South Perry resident Jim Ahasay, who lives just south of the business area.
