WALeg Day 26: Med school bill may come out of House committee

OLYMPIA -- The House Higher Education Committee could vote on the proposal to change state law to allow WSU to start its own medical school.

HB 1559 doesn't have any money attached. It just changes the state law that gives only the University of Washington the authority to offer medical education. If it comes out of committee, the bill could have smooth sailing in the House because it has 65 reps signed on as supporters.

It's on the committee's agenda, but word from Rep. Marcus Riccelli, the bill's sponsor, says the committee vote may be delayed until Tuesday.

Also on tap, House Capital Budget could take up bills that would try to get the federal government to turn over Forest Service land to the state. (9:30 a.m update: Chairman Hans Dunshee announced there would be no executive session for the committee so they could finish testimony on bills getting their first hearing. Federal lands bills are on the schedule for next week.) House Public Safety could take up bills on sexual predators.

But don't look for any action this afternoon. The House is working a half day, and the Senate barely at all, with only a pro forma floor session and caucuses on the agenda. You'd think it was Friday or something.

Here's the hearing schedule.
