Gonzaga avenges earlier loss to San Francisco Dons

From a tie for fourth place to fourth place alone. From a tie for third place to a tie for second place. And now, solo second place. The Gonzaga men’s basketball team has made up quite a bit of ground the last three weeks. The Bulldogs continued their climb up the West Coast Conference standings by handling San Francisco 70-53 in front of 6,000 Saturday at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

ArenaBowl-champion Spokane Shock open training camp

The Spokane Shock held their first training-camp practice Saturday and there didn’t seem to be any question among the front office, coaches and returning players that the talent level is better than a year ago at the same time.

Zags, Dons meet in critical game

Nearly a month ago, Gonzaga and San Francisco met at War Memorial Gym to break a second-place tie in the West Coast Conference men’s basketball standings. They’ll do it again on Saturday at 5 at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Spokane Shock set July 9 outdoors game at Albi Stadium

Spokane Shock majority owner Brady Nelson admits the concept sounds a little odd – arena football played outside – but he thinks he can combine the best elements of both. The Shock announced Thursday they will entertain the Utah Blaze on Saturday, July 9, in the Joe Albi Stadium Outdoor Classic. It’ll likely be a night game, but a time hasn’t been set. It’ll be the first outdoor game for a franchise that routinely packs 10,000-plus into the Arena for home games.

West Coast Conference teams jockey for top two seeds

Since the West Coast Conference adopted its current tournament format in 2003, only once has a team seeded third or higher advanced to the championship. That was No. 3 San Diego, which capitalized on home-court advantage to knock off No. 1 Gonzaga in the 2008 tournament. Outside of 2008, the last seven WCC tournaments have come and gone with the top seed defeating No. 2 five times, and the second seed topping No. 1 twice.

A high WCC seed would mean fewer games for GU

It’s hardly breaking news when top seeds advance in a tournament setting, but it underscores the importance of securing a No. 1 or No. 2 seed. Gonzaga still has an outside shot at extending its record run of 10 consecutive regular-season titles, but it would need help.

Gonzaga’s Dower steps up admirably for ill Sacre

MALIBU, Calif. – Robert Sacre’s stomach was in turmoil most of Friday and Saturday, but he was happy about one thing: He didn’t get his roommate, Sam Dower, sick on the road trip. Elias Harris had his third double-double of the season and Dower, filling in for Sacre, chipped in 13 points as the Gonzaga men’s basketball team cooled off the Pepperdine Waves 63-44 in front of 2,484 Saturday at Firestone Fieldhouse.

National JC wrestling host NIC goes after regional win

As far as North Idaho College wrestling coach Pat Whitcomb is concerned, the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament essentially begins today at the Region 18 tournament. The top-ranked Cardinals, who will host the NJCAA tournament at the Spokane Convention Center in two weeks, hope to position themselves favorably with a strong showing at regionals at Southwestern Oregon College in Coos Bay.

Pepperdine a threat

MALIBU, Calif. – Gonzaga figured Thursday’s men’s basketball contest with Loyola Marymount wasn’t going to be easy, even with Lions leading scorer Drew Viney in street clothes. The same scenario applies to tonight’s game against Pepperdine, which will be without Keion Bell, who has been suspended for the remainder of the season for conduct detrimental to the team.

Zags play at Pepperdine

Keion Bell, Pepperdine’s top scorer the last three years, has missed the last two games, but the Waves responded with a pair of wins. The Zags take on the Waves in Malibu Saturday night.

Gonzaga takes over third place alone in WCC

LOS ANGELES – Loyola Marymount men’s basketball coach Max Good surveyed the stat sheet and liked what he saw for the most part. “If you had told me (Robert) Sacre was going to go 1 for 6 and (Steven) Gray 5 for 16, I would have liked my chances,” Good said. “But it’s a sign of a good team that they have other guys. (Sam) Dower goes 4 of 4 and (David) Stockton was the key player in this game.”

Gonzaga men win sloppy game

The mistake-prone Bulldogs couldn’t put Loyola Marymount away and ended up having to fend off a late Lions’ rally to claim a sloppy 67-57 West Coast Conference men’s basketball victory Thursday in front of 2,964 at Gersten Pavilion.

Gonzaga continues up-and-down season with loss to Memphis

Just when one thinks the Gonzaga Bulldogs may have turned a corner, they run into another roadblock. For the second straight game, the Bulldogs rallied from a 13-point deficit, only this time they weren’t able to finish the job, falling 62-58 to Memphis in the Ronald McDonald House Charities Classic viewed by 10,778 Saturday afternoon at the Arena.

Zags look to build NCAA tournament resume with a win against Memphis

After securing a road win over Portland on Thursday that keeps them in the thick of the West Coast Conference men’s basketball race, the Gonzaga Bulldogs now turn their attention to beefing up their NCAA tournament resume. The Bulldogs (15-8, 5-3 WCC) entertain Memphis (16-6, 5-3 Conference USA) today at 1 p.m. at the Arena in GU’s annual Ronald McDonald House Charities Classic. As of Friday afternoon, about 500 tickets were still available.

Zags rally, hold off Portland

PORTLAND – The airborne chest bumps and high-fives after the final horn were a pretty good indicator of just how big this comeback win was for the Gonzaga Bulldogs. They nearly got run out of the building early by five Portland 3-pointers. They made up most of that deficit only to slip behind by seven in the second half. Facing an opponent that hadn’t lost on its home floor this season, the Bulldogs rallied behind reserves David Stockton and Marquise Carter, a rock-solid effort from Rob Sacre and clutch work late by Steven Gray to dig out a 67-64 win Thursday in front of a packed house of 4,852 at the Chiles Center.
