Portraits Of ‘Homegirls’ A Window On Gang World

Joe Ehrbar Correspondent

Photographer Domingo A. Rodriguez’s portraits of Los Angeles “homegirls,” otherwise known as female Chicana gang members, will be on display in the Spokane Falls Community College Library from April 3 to May 7.

“A homegirl is often portrayed as harsh, masculine and brutal,” said Rodriguez in a press release. “In my images, I have attempted to capture her sensitivity, her unfamiliarity and her vulnerability within the context of her social milieu.”

Rodriguez, a native of Los Angeles, has been photographing young women gang members for six years.

The exhibit will be open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursdays. Hours on Friday are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Sunday, it’s 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Admission is free.

History of Old West class

Ever wonder how the story of the Old West really unfolded?

To answer this, Eastern Washington University will offer a special spring course called “New Perspectives on the American West.”

The class, Saturdays April 15 through May 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., will draw on several mediums, including documentaries, theater, art and written sources, to fully capture the true essence of the Old West. The course, which counts for college credit, costs $195 for three credits and $260 for four credits.

“New Perspectives on the American West” is a self-support class, meaning if there aren’t enough people to enroll in the course, it will be canceled.

All reservations must be postmarked by April 7.

For registration information, call EWU Continuing Education at (509) 359-2268. And for course content information, call Lawrence Cebula at (509) 235-5880.
