Young Sings And Things Go From Vedder To Better

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

Pearl Jam fans sure are an unforgiving crew. When PJ lead singer Eddie Vedder was unable to go on during a Saturday night concert at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, the band came up with a respectable replacement.

Neil Young performed for about 90 minutes.

Vedder had been treated for the flu at a hospital emergency room just before the show. He gave up the stage after singing just six songs. “I just went through the worst 24 hours of my life,” he told the crowd, estimated at 50,000.

As for the reaction from those fans, “We want to know where the hell Eddie is,” said Lissa Harrison of Dublin, Calif. “We don’t care if he’s puking. I didn’t go to Neil Young. I came to Pearl Jam.”

And from Julie Gerbel of San Luis Obispo, “We’re extremely bummed out, kind of like disappointed.”

Val Kilmer, star of “Batman Forever,” on Hollywood casting practices (in Entertainment Weekly): “It’s so rare when an actor gets hired because he’s right for the role. It just doesn’t figure into it.”

Same goes for his alter ego, Bob Keeshan

Captain Kangaroo turns 68 today.

Without those nominations, people might forget her

So why has Susan Lucci, star of “All My Children,” been nominated for an Emmy 15 times and never won? Ask the woman who played her daughter on the program. “Susan and I were not best friends, and we’re never going to be,” Sarah Michelle Gellar told TV Guide. Gellar, 18, an Emmy-winner on her first try, left the show to work in movies.

If Mike fills in for her, who’d ever know the difference?

Mike Myers is a star, but his mother-in-law has potential. The real Linda Richman is set to star in a talk show. “It’s going to be great,” a source from the William Morris agency told the New York Daily News. “Here’s this regular woman sitting down with big stars and asking them the kind of questions all the little people out there want to know.”

No, no, NO, the spray of blood has to be higher, wider

Sylvester Stallone, defending his corner of the movie market, rationalized action films for Interview magazine. “The Bible is action-packed,” he said. “The Koran is action-packed. Even Buddha had a few moments of suspense in his life. Yet when we make action movies now, we’re considered moneymaking machines with no esoteric worth, and that’s not true at all. There’s a lot of artistry that goes into what we do.”

He’s worried it may be Aunt Bea looking for work

After a handful of hit movies, and “Apollo 13” in the wings, director Ron Howard still has moments of doubt. “When somebody calls out, ‘Hey Opie!’ from across the parking lot, I’ll wince a little,” he says.

‘Life is like a box of’ … thump, thump

What was David Letterman’s “favorite part” of “Batman Forever”? “When Batman and his friend Robin hop in the Bat pickup,” he said, “and try to run down Forrest Gump.”
