It was to be a star-studded celebration of Shirley MacLaine, featuring some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.

Those serving on the committee for the Lincoln Center Film Society’s tribute included Mikhail Baryshnikov, Annette Bening, Sally Field, David Geffen, Daryl Hannah, Anthony Hopkins, Jack Lemmon, Mike Nichols, Julia Roberts, Frank Sinatra, Meryl Streep and Billy Wilder.

And chairing the event were Barbra Streisand and MacLaine’s baby brother, Warren Beatty.

So what happened on Monday, the big night? MacLaine found herself sharing a table with only Richard Benjamin, Carl Bernstein and Bella Abzug. The others stayed away.

Excuses varied, but New York Daily News reported the guests were upset about MacLaine’s recent tell-all memoir “My Lucky Stars.”

Loose talk

Stephen King on TV watching (in Entertainment Weekly): “Basically I’m TV illiterate. What people say about books - ‘I keep meaning to read that’ - I say about TV. I keep meaning to watch shows like ‘The X-Files,’ but I just never get around to it.”

You wanna watch tonight? Nah, let’s wait for tomorrow

Tom Snyder turns 59 today.

He’s gone to that great Virginia in the sky

Our apologies to Doug McClure fans. The former “Virginian” star could not have turned 60 on Thursday because he died of cancer last Feb. 5 at age 59.

And then, of course, awaaaay they went!

Speaking of tell-all memoirs (see lead item), Richard Pryor shares a few secrets in his new book “Pryor Convictions.” For example, the time Jackie Gleason showed him how to buy some marijuana. “He showed me a sneaky way of handling the exchange, and then he winked,” Pryor writes. “We laughed. Two stars. Getting paid a few million dollars. And we were practicing dope deals.”

Take Sominex tonight and sleep, sleep, sleep

Tony Randall, who is the official spokesperson for sleeping disorders, had to postpone his appearance on Tuesday’s “Wake Up America.” His excuse? He overslept.

Her mantra used to be maple bar, maple bar, maple bar

Though she shrunk from a size 24 to a size eight through dieting, talk-show host Ricki Lake continues to fight her weight. “It rules my life,” she told Out magazine. “It’s like a mental disorder. But I’ve been conquering it. For the first time, I actually like my body.”

Which is something we can’t say about Doug McClure

Turning himself into the Betty Ford Clinic won’t be enough, actor Gary Busey still faces drugs charges levied by Malibu, Calif., police. Busey, 50, was discovered in his Malibu home suffering from cocaine overdose. He was charged Tuesday, just before his entrance into the clinic. And what was his reaction? “He’s happy being prosecuted, because he’s alive,” said attorney Harland W. Braun.
