Relay Run Will Aid Cancer Research

Joe Ehrbar Correspondent

Teams are being formed for Relay for Life, a fund-raising event for the American Cancer Society June 2 and 3 at Spokane Falls Community College.

The event is a 24-hour relay run in which teams of 12 to 15 people run or walk to raise money and awareness for cancer education, research and patient services.

Some 1,000 cancer survivors are expected to take the first lap.

Each runner is asked to raise a minimum of $100 for the relay. To register a team also costs $100.

The registration deadline is today. Call 326-5802 for more information.

Skin cancer screenings

May is National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Month. On May 24, in an effort to increase public awareness of this deadly disease, 12 Spokane dermatologists will offer free skin cancer screenings at four area hospitals.

Skin cancer affects nearly a million people every year. If detected early, the disease is 95 percent treatable.

To make an appointment, call any of the four participating hospitals: Deaconess Medical Center, 459-4995; Holy Family Hospital, 482-2254; Sacred Heart Medical Center, 626-4535; and Valley Hospital and Medical Center, 459-4995.

Stroke Awareness Week

The Sunshine Stroke Association will sponsor Stroke Awareness Week May 21-27.

On May 23, the support group for stroke victims and care-givers will meet at the West Central Community Center, N. 1603 Belt, at 7 p.m.

The evening’s keynote speaker is Brian Shute, who will talk about post-stroke problems and how the families can cope with stroke.

Prior to the evening session, at 3 p.m., there will be an afternoon meeting at St. Luke’s Rehabilitation center, 811 S. Cowley. At the meeting, Patsy Sipes will speak about aphasica and Rod Donally will touch on how the family can cope with a stroke victim.

The Sunshine Stroke Association meets every fourth Tuesday of the month at the West Central Community Center.
