Cans Film Festival Comes To Spokane

Three cans of food is all it will cost to see a movie tonight at any of the movie houses in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls owned by Act III Theatres.

As part of its annual CANS Film Festival, Act III is holding the event to benefit emergency food programs of the Spokane Food Bank plus similar organizations in Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls.

There are restrictions: Starred attractions are excluded from the festival, and moviegoers won’t be allowed to donate glass jars, home-canned or unlabeled items or open packages.

Acceptable non-perishable items include: canned soups, stews, fruit, vegetables, plus breakfast cereal, peanut butter in plastic jars, pasta and other dry-packaged foodstuffs.

The 1994 festival garnered some 13,500 pounds of food, which went to meet the needs of the food bank’s 17 emergency food-box outlets in Spokane County. Each month the program serves more than 12,000 needy people, more than half of whom are children.

Participating theaters in Spokane include the Newport Highway, North Division, Lyons Ave., Lincoln Heights, East Sprague, Eastside and Fox Tri-Cinemas.
