Good, Clean Fun Kudos

Lynn Gibson Correspondent

If you have a terrific child care provider who gives you peace of mind as a working parent, enter your caregiver in the Lysol KidsHealth Day Care Awards competition.

A prize of $1,000 will be awarded in each of two categories: “Best Home Away From Home” for day-care facilities caring for 10 or more children, and “Most Caring Caregiver” for individuals working in at-home care or in a day-care center.

Winners will also receive a year’s supply of Lysol Disinfectant Spray, Resolve Carpet Cleaner and Chubs Baby Wipes.

Plus, if your nominee wins, you win a $250 cash prize for a Parents’ Night Out.

To enter, submit an essay of 100 to 200 words explaining why your facility or caregiver deserves the award. (Specify which category you are entering.) Include examples of how your nominee nurtures the child’s intellectual and emotional development while maintaining high safety, health and hygiene standards.

Send the essay with your name, address and phone number and that of your nominee to: KidsHealth Day Care Awards, P.O. Box 1416, Young America, MN 55594-1416.

Child care and health professionals will judge the entries, which must be received by Dec. 15. Winners will be chosen by Jan. 31, 1996. For a list of official contest rules, call (800) 810-8687.

Future pet owners: Learning about pet care is made fun and fascinating in a new video, “Let’s Explore … Furry, Fishy, Feathery Friends” (Braun Film and Video, $14.95). Seven-year-old Mekenzie and her dad visit a pet store and discover there is more to choosing a pet than meets the eye.

The 30-minute video gives viewers a look at traditional pets such as hamsters, kittens and fish and some not-so-traditional choices such as hedgehogs, alligators and iguanas.

To order, call (800) 815-6205.

Kids learn to manage anger: Fred Rogers wants children to grow up to be teenagers and adults who work out their conflicts in nonviolent ways.

“Angry feelings are a natural part of being human,” says Rogers, “but we don’t need to hurt anyone or ruin things when we’re angry.” He teaches these lessons on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood in a new series of programs, “What Do You Do with the Mad that You Feel?” today through Friday at 8 a.m. on KSPS-TV, Channel 7, in conjunction with Act Against Violence, the Public Television Outreach Alliance Campaign.

To supplement the week’s programs, Rogers offers parents a free copy of the booklet, “Talking With Families About Discipline.”

To receive a copy, send a self-addressed, stamped, business-size envelope to: Discipline, Department RR, c/o Family Communications Inc., 4802 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213.

Before tying the knot: Brides and grooms are invited to attend bridal seminars presented by The Bon Marche Thursday at the downtown Spokane store, and Friday at the NorthTown Mall location. Both events are from 6 to 9 p.m.

Hear a variety of speakers, sample wedding cakes, meet vendors and register for door prizes.

Admission is free, but reservations are requested. Call 626-6672 for the downtown Bon, and 482-6895 at NorthTown.
