The Story Of Seattle Times A Perspective On City History

Susan English Staff Writer

We, of course, don’t think stories of newspapers make riveting reading for everyone, but the history of a town’s newspaper is intertwined with the story of that city’s development.

Those interested in stories of Seattle - the town and the Times - can pick up a copy of a new book published by the Washington State University Press, “Raise Hell and Sell Newspapers: Alden J. Blethen and The Seattle Times.”

The book’s publication coincides with the centennial celebration of Blethen’s purchase of the newspaper on Aug. 10, 1896.

Seattle authors Sharon Boswell and Loraine McConaghy both teach history at the University of Washington. The 304-page book includes 270 illustrations (historic photos, newspaper articles and advertisements. The price is $14.95.
