Shooting Victim Charged In Burglary
A man who told Albany police he had been shot by someone in a passing car along Interstate 5 was arrested Sunday after a Salem resident reported wounding a burglar.
Joseph Penland, 38, of Salem was charged with burglary and a parole violation, police said.
Police said Penland was wounded when Roy Zumstein confronted a burglar in his basement Friday evening. Penland was shot in the arm and the right knee.
Penland then had his girlfriend drive him to Albany, where she called for help from a convenience store, Salem Police Detective Mike Quakenbush said.
She claimed Penland had been shot by someone in a passing car while he was filling the radiator of their car along I-5 just outside Albany.
“By the time he had gotten to Albany, we were already investigating and looking for our burglary suspect,” Quakenbush said.
He said Penland’s girlfriend eventually broke down crying and told Albany police officer Robin McKnight the incident originated in Salem.
Penland was arrested upon his release from Albany General Hospital.
He was being held Sunday night in the Marion County Jail pending a Sept. 4 court appearance.
