In The Fashion World, Georgio’s Fans Armani

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

No, Giorgio Armani isn’t a European principality boasting a rich-but-dysfunctional royal family.

But he is the next best thing. As one of the world’s most successful fashion designers, Armani is able to attract the world’s beautiful people at pretty much any fiesta he hosts.

Such as the one he held Thursday to celebrate the opening of two New York boutiques. Among the guests: the Duchess of York, Glenn Close, Gwyneth Paltrow, Winona Ryder, Mira Sorvino, Laurence Fishburne, Mariah Carey, Ashley Judd, Spike Lee, Mike Tyson, Christie Brinkley and Naomi Campbell.

“You are a fashion salvation,” Judd told Armani. “I would not have the confidence to stand in front of all these people without Giorgio.”

Loose talk

Patricia Hearst on the 17th anniversary of her marriage to ex-bodyguard Bernard Shaw (on Conan O’Brien): “My parents gave us a Sears vacuum cleaner as a wedding present. They thought it wouldn’t last.”

He’s still scaring the dickens out of his fans

David Copperfield turns 39 today.

Now he’ll be alone as his guitar gently weeps

George Harrison may have been insensitive when, in 1993, he said “I’m being raped by all these people” who were cutting through his private property on Maui. But insensitivity is not defamation, ruled a judge. Judge Shackley Raffetto ruled that the former Beatle, who lives near Hana, was using “rhetorical hyperbole.”

He’s auditioning to lead sing for R.E.M.

Robert Downey Jr. appears to be doing OK while undergoing treatment for his drug problems. “Real good,” he said when asked how things were going. “It’s working.” But he didn’t look well, according to one news agency that described his haircut as “like someone turned a bowl on his head and snipped the edges of his hair. Very 1995.”

Caroline isn’t handling her aging with grace

Speaking of looking bad, photos published in the London Daily Mail and in the Italian magazine Oggi aren’t particularly flattering to Monaco’s Princess Caroline, 39. The princess, whose little sister Stephanie is estranged from husband Daniel Ducruet, is shown looking bald and gaunt, the result, observers say, of a mysterious illness.

After all, she’s not trying to be Anna Nicole Smith

In addressing the furor over her weight, Venezuela’s Miss Universe, 19-year-old Alicia Machado, admits that she is heavier. “Yes, I have put on weight,” Machado told a Caracas TV network. “But I can represent my country with or without the five kilos.”

And you know how their two marriages ended up

So, the marriage of billionaire Ron Perelman and Patricia Duffy appears to be ending. Big surprise. The couple was introduced by the fun couple of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith.
