Obituaries

Robert Heskett, M.D. Spokane

Memorial service for Robert G. Heskett, 83, a retired Spokane pediatrician, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church. Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Heskett, who was born in Chisholm, Minn., died April 9.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He was a graduate of Harvard Medical School and trained at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich., and the University Hospital in Cleveland.

He practiced as a pediatrician in Spokane from 1940 to 1970. He had also served as president of the medical staffs of Sacred Heart Medical Center and Deaconess Medical Center.

In 1970 Dr. Heskett became the first coordinator of medical education for the University of Washington in Spokane. Spokane residency programs affiliated with the University of Washington were started in family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics-gynecology and pathology.

Dr. Heskett became a full professor of the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1979. He was a member of the University of Washington School of Medicine Admissions Committee and retired in 1981.

His wife, Anne Heskett, died in 1995.

Survivors include two sons, John and Roger Heskett, both of Spokane; a brother, David Heskett of Bismarck, N.D.; a sister, Mary Lou Heskett of Maplewood, Minn.; and nine grandchildren.

Lucille Jones Spokane

Memorial service for Lucille C. Jones, 99, is set for 1 p.m. today at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Private entombment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jones, a 93-year Spokane resident, died Saturday.

She was born in James, Iowa, and graduated from of North Central High School. She received a teaching certificate from Cheney Normal School and taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Mondovi, Wash.

Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and a founding member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She was also a member of El Karnak Temple Daughters of the Nile.

Her husband, Roderick Jones Sr., died in 1968.

She is survived by a son, Roderick Jones Jr. of the Spokane Valley; a brother, John Claney of San Jose, Calif.; three grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, several stepgreat-grandchildren and one stepgreat-great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church or the Deaconess Medical Center Guild.

Nancy Peterson Spokane

Memorial service for Nancy B. Peterson, 91, will be held at a later date. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Peterson, who was born in Berkeley, Calif., died Thursday.

She came to Spokane in 1910 and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and the University of Oregon. She attended the University of Washington for a year.

She taught school in the early 1930s in Sandpoint, and then returned to Spokane where she worked as a social worker for the state of Washington Adoption Agency.

She retired in the early 1970s.

Miss Peterson was a member of Chi Omega and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Helen Gray of Spokane.

Alice Shanks Spokane

Service for Alice M. (Curry) Shanks, 88, was Monday at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Mrs. Shanks, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Thursday.

She married Bernie Shanks in 1939. He died in 1984.

She was a homemaker and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 51 Auxiliary.

Mrs. Shanks is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Eleanor (Van Horn) Dark Coeur d’Alene

Urn burial for Eleanor Grace (Van Horn) Dark, 79, will be held Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dark, who was born in New Jersey, died Thursday.

She had worked for several years during World War II as an assistant to the head of the Office of War Information in London, and spent eight years as assistant to the New York playwright, Garson Kanin.

She was an assistant to the owner of the Beverly Hills Hotel for 25 years, later becoming a member of the board of directors.

Mrs. Dark lived in Italy from 1950-52 before moving to Los Angeles, where she was a 44-year resident.

She moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1996.

Mrs. Dark was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Christopher, in 1971.

Survivors include two nephews, Frederick Slocum of New Jersey and Gianalfonso D’Avossa of Romer, Italy.

Rosa Zinkgraf Spokane

Memorial service for Rosa May Zinkgraf, 90, is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Spokane Christian Center. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Zinkgraf, who was born in Rockford, died April 8.

In 1925 she married Ervin Zinkgraf. He died in 1971.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the East Spokane Grange, Sinto Senior Center, Valley Mission Senior Center, Knight of Columbus Senior Center, Corbin Center and Mountain View Homemakers Club.

Mrs. Zinkgraf had worked for the Spokane Interstate Fair in the Home Art Department and served as a judge at several other fairs.

Survivors include two daughters, Rosalyn Odgers of Seattle and Thorabelle Folsom of Newman Lake; two sons, Clayton and Zell Zinkgraf, both of the Spokane Valley; two brothers, Walter Little of Hungry Horse, Mont., and Jack Little of Libby, Mont.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the American Heart Association.

Eugene Stark Spokane

Memorial service for Eugene A. Stark, 73, is planned for 11 a.m. today at Opportunity Free Methodist Church. There will be private inurnment at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stark, who died Thursday, was born in Spokane and raised in Mica.

Mr. Stark served in the Army during World War II and received two Purple Heart awards.

He worked as a floor covering installer for contractors and also worked for the Central Valley School District’s maintenance department, before retiring in 1973.

Mr. Stark was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Rockford Post and the Spokane Valley Eagles.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjory Stark.

Mr. Stark is survived by his companion Dorothy Senter; a son, Ron Stark of Otis Orchards; and two grandchildren.

Howard Cameron Spokane

Memorial service for Howard F. Cameron, 80, took place Monday at Spokane Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Mr. Cameron, who was born near Condon, Ore., died Friday.

He was a graduate of Walla Walla High School and Walla Walla College and taught English at high schools in Osburn, Wallace, Mullan and Moscow, Idaho. He also taught in Washington and Oregon. He retired in 1972.

He had lived in Spokane for 10 years.

He was a member of the Osburn Lions Club.

His wife, Marjorie, died in 1993.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Uhden and Laura Brittain, both of Spokane, and Judy Carpenter of Portland; a son, Douglas Cameron of Spokane; two sisters, Dorothy Buck of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Iris Cooper of Springfield, Ore.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Ken Bellmore Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Service for Ken Bellmore, 70, will be today at 1 p.m. at the Bonners Ferry Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry.

Mr. Bellmore, who was born in Big Fork, Mont., died Friday.

He grew up in Big Fork, and worked for General Telephone Co. He worked as an equipment technician in various cities in Washington and Montana before moving to Bonners Ferry in 1966. He retired from G.T.E. in 1985 after 36 years.

Mr. Bellmore was a licensed pilot and a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics and the Eagles Aerie.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Jeanette; a son, Clifford Bellmore of Wenatchee; a daughter, Joanne Bellmore of Bonners Ferry; four grandchildren, Leah, Bobby, Brent and Leora; and four great-grandchildren, Shawn, Robby, Jenna and Blake.

Lillian Hopkins Spokane

Graveside service for Lillian Mae Hopkins, 79, is set for 1 p.m. Thursday at Endicott (Wash.) Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hopkins, who was born in Endicott, died Friday.

In 1936 she married James Hopkins in Endicott and they worked in the LaCrosse, Wash., area and later moved to Lamont, Wash., where they worked on cattle ranches.

Her husband died in 1983 and Mrs. Hopkins moved to Spokane.

She is survived by a son, Jerry Hopkins of Spokane; four sisters, Nora Leinweber and June Moore, both of Colfax, Eva Hopkins of Longview, Wash., and Mary Dodge of St. John, Wash.; three brothers, Ray Bafus of Brewster, Wash., Leon Bafus of Lewiston and Ralph Bafus of Snohomish, Wash.; and two grandsons.

Mary Hooker Hayden Lake, Idaho

Service for Mary Lee Hooker, 61, will be today at 2 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Gathering Chapel. A reception will follow at the chapel gathering center. Mrs. Hooker, who was born in Los Angeles, died Friday.

She grew up in San Bernardino, Calif., and attended nursing college. Mrs. Hooker worked as a registered nurse in California for 44 years before moving to Hayden Lake in 1976.

She continued her nursing career, retiring from Kootenai Medical Center in 1995.

Mrs. Hooker was a member of the American Nursing Society, the Kootenai County Sheriff Auxiliary and Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Jerry; two sons, Douglas Hooker of Tennessee and Daniel Hooker of Moses Lake; a daughter, Judith Lowery of Hayden Lake; and 10 grandchildren.

Sara Nonini Deer Park

Service for Sara Caroline Nonini, 95, will be at 2 p.m. today at Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park. Burial will follow at Holy Redeemer/Kelly Cemetery in Deer Park.

Mrs. Nonini, a longtime Deer Park resident, died Thursday.

She was born in Sawyer, Wis., and was a graduate of Albion State Normal College in Idaho. She taught school in Idaho, Washington and Alaska.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church and Deer Park Senior Citizens.

Her husband, Larry Nonini, died in 1963.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Harriet White Spokane

Graveside service for Harriet J. (Olson) White, 94, was held Saturday at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. White, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Thursday.

She graduated from North Central High School and Cheney Normal School and taught school for two years. She also worked as a restaurant cook.

Mrs. White was a longtime member of Salem Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Ed White, died in 1967.

Mrs. White is survived by a stepson, Walter White of Ventura, Calif.; and two stepgrandchildren.

Camella ‘Camie’ Legard Wallace

Memorial service for Camella Joan “Camie” Legard, 61, will be Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Pinehurst, Idaho. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Legard, who was born in Kansas, died Saturday.

She moved to the Silver Valley in 1945, and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Jerry; three children, Jeffrey Legard and Lori Pitts, both of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Eddie Legard of Seattle; three sisters, Suzanne Clark of Osburn, Idaho, Christine Glisson of Tacoma and Ernestine Davis of Kellogg; three brothers, Willie Stanphill of Seattle, Thuman Stanphill of Seattle and Tom Stanphill of Vancouver, Wash.; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Ethel Goetjen Veradale

Service for Ethel M. Goetjen, 76, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hope Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Saltese Cemetery in Greenacres. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Mrs. Goetjen died Saturday.

She had worked for the U.S. Border Patrol for 12 years and for the Federal Home Administration for 12 years, before retiring in 1981.

She had lived in Spokane and Veradale for 35 years and was a member of Hope Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Herman Goetjen, died in 1994.

Mrs. Goetjen is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Knaus of Bealeton, Va.; a brother, Joe Teskey of Chilliwack; three granddaughters and three great-grandsons.

Sarah Marshall Spokane

Service for Sarah Elizabeth McLendon Marshall, 85, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Marshall, who died Friday, was born in Mendenhall, Miss.

She was a 53-year Spokane resident, a homemaker and a member of the Southern Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Marshall.

Mrs. Marshall is survived by five sons, Mack and James McLendon, both of Mendenhall, Leland Marshall of Deer Park, and John McLendon and Ted Marshall, both of Spokane; a daughter, Gussie Pintler of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters Lorraine Johnson of Crystal Springs, Miss., and Maxie Pilcher of Spokane; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Henry Heid Otis Orchards

Service for Henry Russell Heid, 75, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Born in Hanover, Kan., Mr. Heid was found dead at his home April 9.

He was a 59-year Spokane resident and worked as a machine operator for Kaiser Aluminum in Trentwood for 36 years. He was also a farmer.

Mr. Heid served in the Air Force during World War II and was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Lodge and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include a brother, Forrest Heid of Post Falls.

Brent Eastman Veradale

Service for Brent W. Eastman, 57, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Eastman, who was born in Monroe, Wash., died Saturday.

He came to Spokane 43 years ago and worked for Interpace in Mica for 28 years. He worked as a building contractor for the past six years.

He was a member of Spokane Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Mr. Eastman is survived by his wife of 39 years, Donna Eastman; two sons, Randy and Ronald Eastman, both of Spokane; a daughter Brenda Bolden of College Place, Wash.; four brothers, Byron Eastman of Walla Walla, Rod Eastman of Reardan, Wash., and Donald Eastman and Clifford Hobert, both of Spokane; a sister, Carol Ludiker of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Julia Williams Spokane

Private graveside service will be held for Julia A. Williams at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Williams, who died Sunday, was born in Tilbury, Ontario. She was 94.

She came to Spirit Lake, Idaho, in 1926 and settled in Post Falls in the early 1930s. She moved to the Spokane Valley in 1943.

Mrs. Williams was a homemaker.

Her husband, William Williams, died in 1968.

She is survived by three daughters, Helen Backlund of Spokane, Betty Fields of Coeur d’Alene and Thelma Williams of Beaverton, Ore.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Delores Ehnes Spokane

Graveside service for Delores (Bonser) Ehnes, 64, was Monday at Peone Prairie Cemetery.

Mrs. Ehnes, who died Thursday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

She graduated from Rogers High School and was a homemaker.

She was a member of Sunrise Church of Christ, New Beginnings Christian Fellowship and Westgate Christian Church.

Mrs. Ehnes is survived by her husband of 45 years, Ted Ehnes; a son, John Ehnes of Spokane; a daughter, Linda Ehnes of Seattle; a brother, Willford “Bud” Bonser of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Washington.

Edward Stralka Veradale

Memorial Mass for Edward J. Stralka, 71, was Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church.

Mr. Stralka, who was born in Superior, Wis., died Friday.

He had lived in Spokane for 42 years and had worked as an engineer for Burlington Northern Railroad.

His wife, Carole, died in February.

Mr. Stralka is survived by a son, David Stralka of Deer Park; a daughter, Suzanne Stralka of Veradale; a brother, Conrad Stralka of Superior, Wis.; three sisters, Angie Collins, Ann Sitek and Claire Magneson all of Superior; and a granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Intensive Care Unit of Holy Family Hospital.
