Two Spokane Artists Chosen Among Best In Nw Arts Fair
Two Spokane artists are among those selected as the best in the annual Pacific Northwest Arts Fair at the Bellevue Art Museum.
Gina Freuen received the fair’s top honor, the Carol Duke Award for Excellence. The award, with its $1,000 prize, is presented to the artist who signifies overall artistic and professional excellence.
Dean Derek Eliasen received one of the six major awards in the annual juried exhibition.
Some 1,000 artists from across the country and beyond, seeking entry into the fair, submitted 5,000 slides of their work. A panel of experts chose 325 artists to be exhibited.
It’s off to see the Wizard
Auditions for “The Wizard of Oz,” Spokane Civic Theatre’s 51st season opener, will be on the Main Stage, today through Tuesday. The production, an adaptation of the motion picture, will run Sept. 26 through Nov. 1.
Auditions for the munchkins will be at 2 this afternoon. Munchkins must at least be in the second grade and no taller than 5 feet. No advance preparation is needed.
Auditions for the lead roles and chorus will be at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Participants should prepare a 90-second song that’s not from “The Wizard of Oz.” Dancing may also be required.
The role of Toto has already been cast, said Kathy Doyle-Lipe, director.

‘Good Man’ auditions
The Spokane Valley Repertory Theatre has scheduled tryouts for “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” at 2 p.m. Aug. 10 and 7 p.m. Aug. 11 at the theater on the southwest corner of Sprague and Pines.
Six actors, 15 and older, are needed to portray three boys, two girls and a dog.
Auditioners should bring sheet music and be prepared to perform a 90-second song. An accompanist will be provided.

Summer Art Institute
The Spokane Art School is offering a variety of classes for children at least 4 years old during its Summer Art Institute, beginning Monday.
Morning and afternoon classes will include drawing, cartooning, fiber art, ceramics and more.
Walk-in registrations are being accepted for the two-week sessions.

It’s better than Kansas
Spokane artist Terry Gieber’s “Dorothy & Toto Jar 3 XII” has been selected for exhibition in the Northwest International Art Competition in Bellingham’s Whatcom Museum of History and Art Gallery.
Gieber’s piece was one of 60 selected as the best from the annual competition.
The exhibit runs through Oct. 26.
Another ‘best’
Spokane artist Hermon Joyner’s photograph “Kneeling” has been accepted into the Tacoma Art Museum’s Northwest Biennial Art Competition. Joyner’s photo was one of 66 pieces chosen from more than 1,000 entries. The exhibit runs through Sept. 7.
From painting to paper
Dian Zahner, a Spokane artist who specializes in watercolor paintings and handmade paper, is the featured artist for August at the Art Echoes Gallery, 510 W. Riverside, on the skywalk level. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
