Artist’s Sculpture Given To Tutu

Nina Culver Correspondent

Tim Holmes, an artist from Helena, sculpted “Olympic Africa,” which was presented to Archbishop-Emeritus Desmond Tutu in a ceremony at the South African Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Holmes’ sculpture was given as a gesture from the United States in support of Cape Town’s bid to host the 2004 Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee recently announced Cape Town has made the short list of finalist cities. The decision will be made in September.

Area residents might better recognize Holmes as a member The Montana Logging and Ballet Co., a comedy and satire group which raised more than $1 million in funding and scholarships for Tutu in the ‘80s in support of the struggle against apartheid.

Holmes is the only Western artist to have a one-person exhibition at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.
