And We All Know Him As Connery, Sean Connery

Compiled By Staff Writer Dan Web

Sean Connery has played a variety of roles over the past 30 years. But he’ll likely never escape his image as the sexy James Bond.

His “Marnie” co-star Tippi Hedren was one of a number of movie types to honor the Scottish actor at a film tribute in New York on Monday.

“Marnie’s supposed to be frigid,” Hedren said she told director Alfred Hitchcock. “Have you seen him?” Hitchcock’s reply was succinct: “It’s called acting, my dear.”

Other speakers included Ursula Andress (“Dr. No”), director Sidney Lumet (“The Offence”), Blair Underwood (“Just Cause”) and Harrison Ford (“Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”).

“I’m almost embarrassed to be rewarded for doing something that is its own reward,” said Connery. “The constant is the audience. If I do my job right, you won’t ask for your money back.”

Loose talk

ABC News chairman Roone Arledge on not hiring ex-“Today” host Bryant Gumbel (in Vanity Fair magazine): “I read where we ‘lost’ Bryant Gumbel. We didn’t lose Bryant Gumbel. NBC lost Bryant Gumbel… We had no place for him.”

She left her career in that little house on the prairie

Do you know how to spell exploitation? Sure you do

Attention “Friends” fans: Expect to see Robin Williams and Billy Crystal in the show’s “teaser” - its pre-credit sequence - during tonight’s broadcast. The reason? “Friends” is owned by Warner Bros. television, which is the same company that is producing the forthcoming movie “Father’s Day,” which stars - Williams and Crystal.

Some pretty dull stuff comes in the prettiest packages

A note on the “other” royals: Princess Stephanie, estranged from husband Daniel Ducruet, has been seen in the company of Swede Marcus Schenkenberg - one of People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People.”

Jack’s a serial father? Well, isn’t that special?

In a new biography of Jack Nicholson, author Peter Thompson alleges that the 60-year-old movie star has fathered seven illegitimate children. “Jack Nicholson: The Life of an Actor on the Edge” reports that the actor even has a generic pet name for them: He calls them “special people.”

Bets are they don’t live anywhere near the real Melrose

“Melrose Place” fans should love this one: Laura Leighton, who once did the steady thing with fellow cast member Grant Show, has moved in with fellow cast member Doug Savant.

Good thing Arnold left his Beretta back at the estate

How aggressive are paparazzi becoming? As Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver drove their son to school last week, two cars drove up to their vehicle. One clipped the side, and when Shriver stopped to check out the damage, a cameraman jumped out and began shooting pictures. Then both cars sped off. Police are in pursuit.
