Children’s Chorus, Band Join For ‘Angels And Brass’

William Berry Correspondent

Angels and Brass is the title of the Spokane British Brass Band’s concert with the Spokane Area Children’s Chorus on Saturday at St. John’s Cathedral.

The “brass” part is obvious, and the “angels” applies equally well to the location, the band’s repertoire and the kids singing.

The brass band is taking advantage of the cathedral space to play some appropriate sacred and related secular works, including Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, transcribed by director Michael Warner for the brass, the traditional “Oranges and Lemons” and Gabriel Faure’s Messe Basse with the chorus.

This is a chance to hear a British musical tradition without leaving the city: amateur brass bands that play for enjoyment and serious competitions. The Spokane Area Children’s Chorus is taking advantage of the opportunity to bone up for its trip to the British Isles next year.

The concert will also feature music by Purcell, Handel and Haydn as well as traditional band literature. The directors of the ensembles will also be soloists: Warner on piccolo trumpet and chorus director Tamara Schupman as soprano.

Angels and Brass will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th. Tickets are $8 for general admission and $5 for students or seniors, available at the door and G&B Select-a-Seat outlets, or call (800) 325-SEAT.
