Surprise! Sweaty Nipples Isn’t Your Average Band

Nina Culver Correspondent

Just the name of the band is enough to give you a clue that they aren’t your normal mainstream rock group.

The second clue would come when you see their live performance, which has resulted in broken ribs, fingers and an ankle among band members.

And watching Davey Nipples hang a 10-pound weight from his pierced tongue is not for the faint of heart.

Sweaty Nipples features Nipples on bass, guitar and vocals; Scott Heard on vocals and guitar; Ryan Moore on guitar and bass; Dave Merrick on keyboards, vocals and guitar; Brian Lehfeldt on drums, vocals and percussion; and Basil on drums and percussion.

The band has risen from its garage band beginnings in Portland, Ore., in 1987 to a cult following and increasing popularity. And they’ve recorded soundtrack music for Nintendo video games. The band, which tours extensively, performed on the side stage of Lollapalooza ‘92. Band members have also played with White Zombie, Faith No More, among others.

Their most recent album, titled “Thrill Crazed Space Kids … Blasting the Flesh off Humans,” is getting airplay on over 250 radio stations across the country. Their previous release, “Bug Harvest,” sold over 30,000 copies.

The band is getting good reviews.

Billboard magazine: “Discover the raucous hard rock sound supported by impressive guitar and a surprising strong bassline.”

Pandemonium magazine: “These songs have twice the energy of most music today. Maybe up-and-coming rock stars should take lessons from this Portland group on how it really works.”

Willamette Week: “Momentous riffs, thundering drums, depraved vocals and great pop hooks… . these boys are really on to something.”

xxxx Sweaty Nipples will perform at 9 p.m. Friday at The Met. Tickets are $10 in advance ($12 the day of the show), available at G&B Select-a-Seat outlets or call (800) 325-SEAT.
