Hgtv Will Air Live Call-In Show Saturday For Home, Garden Issues

Using a format more common to radio than television, HGTV will telecast a call-in show Saturday during which viewers can get home and gardening questions answered live by HGTV hosts.

“HGTV Live & Online: Summer Ideas for Your Home & Garden” will be broadcast from 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday. Tune in for instructions about where to call with your question. A taped version of the show will be rebroadcast from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Ribbit, oink, oink

Mr. Bud - The Wonder Frog was such a hit that the manufacturer, Dynawestern, has introduced a whole line of animals/amphibians to guard your front door.

Here’s how they work: A motion detector is installed in the plastic frog (or animal). You place Mr. Bud near the door, on the walk or in the garden and when someone walks within eight feet of him, he ribbits three times, warning you someone is near the entrance.

Barn-nee, a pot-bellied pig, is the latest animal. Barn-nee oinks, of course, rather than ribbits. Barn-nee has been oinking away in our office since he arrived, and while some find it annoying, others have offered to adopt Barn-nee.

Also in the lineup of guard animals are Mister Spot and Puppy, a pair of dalmatians which will bark when approached.

The animals are powered by two AA batteries; cost is $19.95 plus shipping for Barn-nee or Mister Spot; $14.95 for Puppy. For a catalog or information call Dynawestern, (800) 365-9360.

Toss it out and slow down

We didn’t have time to read the entire book, but we did read the chapter on simplicity in the newly released “Shelter for the Spirit: How to Make Your Home a Haven in a Hectic World,” by Victoria Moran.

The author dished out great tips for simplifying our lives and homes, ranging from learning to say no to turning off the TV. We’ve all heard it before so it’s not fresh advice; rather, it serves as a timely reminder to constantly declutter.

Other chapters include cleaning, the value of sitting and introducing comforts to our lives.

The book, published by HarperCollins, is $20; the ISBN is: 0-06-0174150-3.

Do it right

With everyone pulling pliers and hammers, screwdrivers and other tools out of the garage to do spring chores, our thoughts should turn to safety.

Every year about 76,000 people end up in emergency rooms for treatment of injuries due to misuse of hand tools, according to the Hand Tool Institute.

Remember: Use the right tool for the job and don’t use whatever tool you happen to have in your hand to hammer, pound or pry. And, always wear safety goggles.
