Margaret Hirschel Rockford

Graveside service for Margaret Hirschel, 84, will be at 11:30 a.m. today at the Fairview Cemetery in Rockford. Memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Rockford. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hirschel, who was born in Latah, died last Thursday.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rockford, Order of the Eastern Star, Rockford Women’s Club and Wilson Creek Grange.

Her husband, Howard Hirschel, preceded her in death.

She is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Saunders of Livermore, Calif., Judith Robinson of Bayview, Idaho, and Linda Ray of Valleyford; a son, Robert Hirschel of Buckley, Wash.; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fairview Cemetery.

Viola (Riley) Mace Spokane

Vigil service for Viola Rose (Riley) Mace, 85, is planned for 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Mace, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Monday.

She worked for The Crescent department store for several years.

Mrs. Mace was a member of St. Augustine Parish and Altar Society, and was a Camp Fire leader.

Her husband, Earl Mace, died in March.

She is survived by three daughters, Judith Brawner of Hayden Lake, Idaho, Kathleen Mace of Cheney and Janet Watson of Spokane; two sisters, Genevieve Lenz of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Pat Eurich of San Diego; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Care Center.

Geneva ‘Loney’ Greenside Spokane

Service for Geneva J. “Loney” Greenside, 81, will be at 11 a.m. today at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Greenside, who was born in Eureka, Mont., died Monday.

She worked at The Crescent department store and was a 68-year resident of Spokane.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Charles; a son, Robert Greenside of Spokane; a daughter, Janet Rucker of Spokane; three brothers, Carl Johnston of Thompson Falls, Mont., Jerry Johnston of Spokane and Forrest Johnston of Tacoma; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Osteoporosis Detection Center or to the Gonzaga Preparatory School Athletic Department.

Billie Sherwood Spokane

Funeral Mass for Billie L. Sherwood, 58, is set for 11 a.m. today at the Spokane Tribal Longhouse in Wellpinit, Wash. Burial will follow at the Wellpinit Community Center. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sherwood, who was born in Rupert, Ark., died Sunday.

She worked as an alcohol counselor on the Spokane Indian Reservation for many years.

Mrs. Sherwood lived in Wellpinit for more than 20 years and moved to Spokane almost two years ago.

Her husband, Eugene Sherwood, died in 1996.

She is survived by two sisters, Juanita Chambers of Strathmore, Calif., and Arlene Ellison of Exeter, Calif.; and two brothers, Robert Pendleton of Spokane and Cordie Pendleton of San Jose, Calif.

Louise Murray Spokane

Visitation for Louise M. Murray, 85, will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Service will follow at 4 p.m. Private burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Murray, a 50-year Spokane resident, died Sunday.

She was born in Bowling Green, Ky., and worked as a mail clerk for Standard Oil Co. for several years.

Mrs. Murray was a member of the Lincoln Heights Senior Center and the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

Her husband, Jack Murray, died in 1985.

She is survived by two half-brothers, Wilbur and Harold McClary, both of Kentucky.

Robert Hossfeld Spokane

Funeral Mass for Robert E. Hossfeld, 73, will be at 8 a.m. today at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Hossfeld, who was born in Butte, Mont., died Sunday.

He graduated from Jefferson County High School in Boulder, Mont., and served in the Pacific with the Marine Corps during World War II.

Mr. Hossfeld worked as a manager for an industrial parts distributor in Spokane and Missoula. He retired in 1989.

He was the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Veradale Post and a member of the American Legion and St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Self of Whitefish, Mont., and Mary Hossfeld of Phoenix; two brothers, Fred Hossfeld of Butte and Jim Hossfeld of Oak Harbor, Wash.; two sisters, Joanne McFarlane of Boulder and Alice Hossfeld of Fairbanks, Alaska; and three grandchildren.

Bernice (McGuire) Boawn Greenacres

Service for Bernice (McGuire) Boawn, 85, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at the Open Door Congregational Church. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Boawn, who was born in Lincoln, Wash., died Sunday.

In 1933 she married Andrew Boawn in Greenacres, Wash.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Mahlie; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Gladys Saterbak Symmes Coeur d’Alene

Private memorial service for Gladys Opal Saterbak Symmes, 85, will be held at a later date. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Symmes, who was born in Minnesota, died Monday.

She grew up in Minnesota and attended the Army Nursing Corps. She served as chief nurse on the hospital ship Marigold during World War II and traveled from Japan to Italy.

Mrs. Symmes moved to Winnemucca, Nev., after the war and worked as a nurse for 20 years before moving to Reno, Nev., where she continued working as a nurse at a state hospital for 15 years.

She retired in 1976 and moved to Coeur d’Alene.

She was a member of the National Nurses Association.

Her husband, Daniel, died in 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Dan Symmes of Colville, Wash., and Mike Symmes of Elko, Nev.; two sisters, Jesse Fish of Michigan and Ann Niving of Everett; and 10 grandchildren.

Timothy Logan Spokane

Graveside service for Timothy V. Logan, 40, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Logan, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Sunday.

He owned Blazer Manufacturing for nine years.

Mr. Logan was a member of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing and Northwest Tour. He was also a former vice president of the Northwest Late Model Association.

Survivors include a daughter, Chrystal Ewell of Spokane; a son, Jeff Logan of Spokane; his father, George Logan of Spokane; his mother, Ethel Logan of Spokane; and a granddaughter.

Jacqueline Zehm Greenacres

Graveside service for Jacqueline J. Zehm, 73, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Zehm, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Monday.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Judith Fischbach of Greenacres; four brothers, Lloyd Clapper of Hauser Lake, Idaho, Charles Clapper Jr. of Nine Mile Falls, William Middleton of Bermont, Calif., and Wayne Clapper of Millwood; two sisters, Hazel Carr of Oregon and Mary Haddon of Nine Mile Falls; and a granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Village.

Thomas Kunz Wilbur, Wash.

Visitation for Thomas “Tom” Kunz, 83, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur. Service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Wilbur Community Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Sherman Cemetery in Wilbur.

Mr. Kunz, a lifetime resident of Wilbur, died Sunday.

He was a past participant in rodeos, where he competed in all-around events, and he later was a wheat farmer and cattle rancher in the Wilbur area.

Mr. Kunz also was a trick roper and entertained at several rodeos, including the National Finals Rodeo at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

He was a member of the Wilbur Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary, Eagles Lodge 2577 in Grand Coulee, Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association, National Cowboy Hall of Fame, Rodeo Historical Society, Washington Cattlemen’s Association and the Washington Horse Racing Association.

Survivors include four daughters, Linda Lasz of Wilbur, Nada Stewart of Alameda, Calif., Gloria Downing of Wilbur and Carol Deahl of Creston, Wash.; a brother, Howard Kunz of Wilbur; three sisters, Nona Kimpel and Persha McPherson, both of Wilbur, and Metra Champion of Spokane; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sherman Cemetery or the Sherman Church Restoration.

Vernon Coolbaugh Spokane

Graveside service for Vernon L. Coolbaugh, 73, is set for 11 a.m. Friday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Coolbaugh, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday.

He graduated in 1943 from North Central High School.

Mr. Coolbaugh served in the Army with the 247th Regiment assigned to Division 70 in Gen. George Patton’s Army. He later served as a military policeman assigned to protect private homes and businesses from pillaging.

He later moved back to Spokane and began working for The SpokesmanReview, where he was employed for 30 years as a journeyman mailer. He retired in 1979.

Mr. Coolbaugh was a member of the Newspaper Mailers Union.

His first wife, Elizabeth Coolbaugh, and his second wife, Margerete Coolbaugh, both preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; three sons, Richard Coolbaugh, Larry Lee and Patrick Eckel; five daughters, Shirley Coolbaugh, Carol McMillion, Jody DeGuire, Peny Lamb and Cheri Byers; three brothers, Roland, Bernard and Wes Coolbaugh; a sister, Wilma Brenten; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Enid Strang Bellevue, Wash.

Service for Enid Genevieve Strang, 78, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Green Funeral Home in Bellevue. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue.

Mrs. Strang, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.

She was a homemaker and moved to Bellevue from Spokane in 1967.

Her husband, Edward Strang preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Jim Strang of Bellevue, a daughter, Kathy Keeling of Kent, Wash,; a brother, Raymond Mohney of Spokane; two sisters, Frances Oien and Martha Hayward, both of Spokane; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lydia Marshalka Spokane

No service will be held for Lydia Marshalka, 94. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of the arrangements.

Ms. Marshalka, who was born in Latvia, died Saturday.

She was a graduate of the Conservatory of Music in Riga, Latvia, and a well-known opera singer in Europe.

After Ms. Marshalka moved to the United States, where she was employed by the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. She was a Slavic language translator and was fluent in six languages.

Upon her retirement in 1971 she lived in Germany and various places in the United States before moving to Spokane 11 years ago.

Ms. Marshalka composed her biography, “A Strange Life.”

She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Survivors include longtime friend, Robert Smick of Spokane.

Floyd Owens Sr. Spokane

A gathering for Floyd E. Owens Sr., 48, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Owens home. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Owens, who was born in Richland, died Saturday.

He moved to Spokane as a child and graduated in 1966 from Ferris High School.

Mr. Owens returned to Richland and worked as a processing operator at Hanford for 22 years. He retired in 1989 and moved back to Spokane in 1991.

In 1983 he married Renee Stacy in Richland.

Mr. Owens was a member of the Richland Jaycees, the Washington State Jaycees, and Bass Anglers Sportsman’s Society. He coached youth football in Richland.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Bruce Owens of Alabama and Floyd Owens Jr. of Spokane; three daughters, Misty and ReAnna Owens, both of Spokane, and Michelle Owens of Kennewick; his mother, Ethel Owens of Spokane; three brothers, Ronald Owens of Seattle, Michael Owens of Airway Heights and Lonzel Boyden of Chicago; a sister, Karen Owens of Spokane; and two grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Medical Center Kidney Dialysis Center.

Alma McNeilly Spokane

Graveside service for Alma Mae McNeilly, a former Colfax, Wash., resident, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. McNeilly, 82, died Wednesday.

She was born in McCracken, Kan., and graduated from Sulfur Springs High School in Arkansas.

In 1944 she married Kenneth McNeilly in Cheyenne Wyo., and moved to Colax that same year.

Mrs. McNeilly was a cosmetics consultant for many years at Grady Drug Store in Colfax. She also worked as an operator for Northwest Bell for 15 years and helped manage Glaser Jewelry Store in Colfax until her retirement.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Her husband died in 1988.

Mrs. McNeilly moved to Spokane in 1990.

Survivors include a daughter, Claudia McGowen of Spokane; a son, Greg McNeilly of Spokane; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association.

Robert Hagerup Puyallup, Wash.

Graveside service for Robert S. “Bob” Hagerup, 64, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Okanogan Valley Memorial Gardens in Okanogan, Wash. Memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Brewster (Wash.) American Legion Hall. The Neptune Society in Tacoma is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hagerup, who was born in Renton, Wash., died Monday.

He moved to Okanogan in 1945 and served in the Navy for four years during the Korean War.

In 1961 he married Joan Bussell and they lived in Spokane. He moved to Puyallup in 1986.

Mr. Hagerup was a member of the American Legion in both Tacoma and Brewster.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Steve Hagerup of Tacoma; a sister, Betty Tracy of Okanogan; and two brothers, Carl Hagerup of Okanogan and Arne Hagerup of Kaslo, British Columbia.
