Robert Kraut’s Work On Display

Beverly Vorpahl Staff writer

A sampling of Robert Kraut’s artwork over the past 20 years is on display at the Eastern Washington University Gallery of Art on the Cheney campus.

The one constant that unifies Kraut’s diversity of styles in “Micro-Retro-Expo, 20 Years in Paint” is his experiments with acrylic polymer emulsions.

He refers to his work as “paintskins” - glossy, pure paint creations that are aggressively cheerful and sleek-looking as though they are machine made.

Kraut paints directly on glass, using a variety of patterns and applications. The result, he said, is a glittering pebble pattern that varies from one area to another.

He peels the “paintskin” off the glass and mounts it, either on glass, canvas, wood - or hub caps.

A New York City art critic said, “If they could talk, they’d shriek “Snap, Crackle, Pop.”’ Kraut has a master’s degree from EWU and once taught art there. He left for New York, where he lived for 18 years before returning to Spokane three years ago. He’s had numerous exhibitions, including one-man shows, from the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art in New York to the Cheney Cowles Museum in Spokane.

“Micro-Retro-Expo, 20 Years in Paint” will be displayed through Dec. 5. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 29.
