Soft Fabrics Replacing Chenille In Upholstery

The Orange County Register

Leather and chenille, the best-selling fabrics for several seasons, continued to dominate upholstery offerings at the national furniture market held recently in High Point, N.C. But changes are on the horizon.

“Color is making inroads in the dominance of neutrals, and chenille’s peak is at hand,” says Michelle Lamb, editor of The Trend Curve, an industry newsletter.

Likely to replace chenille are other soft fabrics, such as cashmere at the high end, a nubby texture known as boucle, and more knits and fleece fabrics at medium prices.

Lamb also predicted velvet’s return “as a luxury fabric rather than a decorating faux pas.”

Earthy tones combined with neutrals and fine textures mate for a tailored, sophisticated look that is key to the new Bohemia collection being introduced by Laura Ashley this fall.

Coloring runs to chocolate, nutmeg, spruce, brick, olive and rose in wall and window coverings, bedding, furniture and lighting.

Trademark Laura Ashley florals give way to subtle stripes, herringbones, and faux fur plus brass, mahogany and suede looks.
