1997 Inland Nw Home Awards

Finding innovative residential designs in Eastern Washington and North Idaho isn’t hard. You just have to know where to look.

One sure bet is to peruse the pile of 35 entries in The Spokesman-Review’s 1997 Inland Northwest Home Awards contest. Earlier this month, that’s what five distinguished jurors did.

Washington State University architecture professor David Wang, Spokane Art School director Sue Ellen Heflin, Cheney Cowles Museum history curator Marsha Rooney, landscape architect Dave Nelson, and Walt Carlson, chairman of North Idaho College’s Division of Applied Technology, Trade and Industry spent hours debating the merits of everything from log cabins and Craftsman revivals to a garage-to-rec-room makeover.

They finally settled on the nine award winners that appear in today’s IN Life section. Those and several other entries will be on display during a public reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at WSU’s Interdisciplinary Design Institute, on the corner of Trent and Riverpoint Boulevard.

The exhibit will continue through Dec. 12. The design institute is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m.-3 p.m. It will be closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving.
