Local Students Chosen For First UI Scholars Class

Three local students have been selected to be named to the first class of University of Idaho Scholars.

Students were selected based on their SAT/ACT test scores (all in the top three percent nationally) and high school GPAs (3.6 and above) and will receive up to $3,000 a year for four years. Students and their hometowns are listed.

Ryan Liverman, Coeur d’Alene, son of Earl and Kathy Liverman, graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School and was active in DECA, the German Club, the INEL Club and the Knowledge Bowl, and is currently majoring in engineering. He will use his degree to design and build mountain and road bicycles.

Seth Gibbon, Post Falls, son of Larry Gibbon and Linda Karlgaard, graduated from Post Falls High School with a 4.0 grade-point average and plans to pursue a major in computer engineering.

Peter Davis, Sandpoint, son of Michael and Jean Davis, graduated from Sandpoint High School, where he took second place in Idaho in the Council of Teachers of Mathematics Exam. He plans to major in both math and applied actuarial science.

Jennifer Gullingsrud, daughter of Jacque and Dean Olson of Post Falls, has been chosen as the September student of the month by the Post Falls Rotary.

Gullingsrud holds a 3.5 grade-point average and has been chosen as most inspirational in her class. She also lettered in academics.

She is involved in softball, basketball, jazz band, Key Club, Kootenai Business Education Partnership, National Honor Society, and ASB/Student Council and is a Chamber of Commerce Representative.

She plans to attend college and major in law and education.

The Lake City Harmonizers, the local chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, will be competing in the Evergreen District contest in Tacoma later this month.

The group, which won the honor to compete at district level from scores in the Spring Division V contest held in Coeur d’Alene, will appear with 16 other choruses from the Northwest with the winners representing the district at the International Competition in Atlanta next year.

Josh Haberman, son of Mark and Cynthia Haberman of Coeur d’Alene and a 1996 American Boychoir School graduate, was one of 19 choristers from the school in Princeton, N.J., to sing on the soundtrack for the upcoming Miramax Film “Wide Awake,” starring Rosie O’Donnell.
