Obituaries

Russell Keene Sandpoint

Memorial service for Russell L. Keene, 87, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint.

Mr. Keene, who was born in Illinois, died Saturday.

He moved to the Sandpoint area in 1911 and attended the Talache School and had worked on a ranch in Priest Lake.

Mr. Keene was also a smoke chaser for the Forest Service and ran a trapline for furs.

He later moved to California and worked in blister-rust control as a camp boss for the Forest Service.

During World War II Mr. Keene served as an Army line medic with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy.

He returned to California after his military service and worked as a hydroelectric operator and also did surveys measuring snow and water content in mountain ranges.

Mr. Keene retired in 1967 and returned to Sandpoint, where he owned Castle Rock Tree Farm in Talache.

He presented many slide shows on building igloos and ice caves.

Two wives preceded him in death: Lily Keene and Zelpha Keene.

Survivors include two sons, Alan Keene of California and Robert Keene of Sagle, Idaho; two sisters, Beatrice Huot of Coeur d’Alene and Sarah Harris of California; and seven grandchildren, Jason, Ralph, Tina, Jenny, John, Alan and Alana.

Mary Shilling Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Mary Frances Shilling, 80, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Mrs. Shilling, who was born in Spiceland, Ind., died Wednesday.

She grew up and graduated from high school in Indianapolis. She also attended business college in Indianapolis for two years.

In 1964 Mrs. Shilling moved to California, and in 1988 she moved to Coeur d’Alene, where she volunteered with the Reach to Recovery Program with the American Cancer Society.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis and the Coeur d’Alene American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Emmons; three sons, Emmons “Sunny” Shilling of Coeur d’Alene, Keith Shilling of California and Jan Shilling of Post Falls; a daughter, Marileen Jacobs of Coeur d’Alene; a brother, Roger Lane of Indiana; two sisters, Mildred Poore of Seattle and Eleanore Blacklidge of Florida; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lyle Holmes Post Falls

Service for Lyle C. Holmes, 69, will be at 2 p.m. today at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls.

Mr. Holmes, who was born in Montana, died Tuesday.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene 23 years ago and had worked as a moldmaker in the plastics industry, retiring from Key Tronic in 1994 after 19 years of service.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Mary; two sons, Kenneth Holmes of Mead and Dan Holmes of Texas; a sister, Bernice Sterner of Kalispell, Mont.; and five grandchildren.

Phyllis Watkins Fernwood, Idaho

Memorial service for Phyllis Watkins, 46, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fernwood Community Church. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Watkins, who was born in British Columbia, died Sunday.

She grew up in British Columbia and lived in North Carolina and Oregon before moving to Fernwood in the 1980s.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Terry; a son, Lane Watkins of Fernwood; a daughter, Michelle Mace of Twin Falls, Idaho; a brother, Ralph Martin of British Columbia; two sisters, Sylvia Milligan and Jean Francis, both of British Columbia; and two grandsons, Christyan and Michael.

Marvin Hobbs Sr. Post Falls

Memorial service for Marvin Dudley Hobbs Sr., 71, will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Hobbs, who was born in Virginia, died Tuesday.

He had worked for Kobe Oil Co., for 36 years as an oil field pump assembler, moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1985 from California.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Madeline; three sons, Gary and Hobbs Jr., both of California, and Charles Hobbs of Post Falls; a brother, Stan Hobbs of Nevada; his stepmother, Elizabeth Hobbs of Arizona; and two grandsons, Charles and Ti’.

LaVerne Manor Spokane

Service for LaVerne O. Manor, 94, will be at 1 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Manor, who was born in Post Falls, died Tuesday.

He graduated from the old McGuire School near Post Falls.

He served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Manor was employed by the Packard Motor Co. in the 1940s and retired from Brown and Holter car dealership in Cheney after 24 years.

He was a member of Cheney Christian Church, the Cheney Masons and Odd Fellows, the Spokane Elks and Eagles lodges and the American Association of Retired Persons.

His wife of 70 years, Ruth, died in 1996.

He is survived by two sons, Arthur Manor of Spokane and Donald Manor of Colville, Wash.; three daughters, Janet and Patricia Manor, both of Spokane, and Judy Gero of Ione, Wash.; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Marjorie Cain Kellogg

Graveside service for Marjorie E. Cain, 99, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cain, who was born in Green Bay, Wis., died Tuesday.

She moved to North Idaho in the early 1900s and graduated from Kellogg High School before moving to Spokane.

Mrs. Cain had worked as a seamstress for The Crescent department store in Spokane for many years and was a member of the Millwood Presbyterian Church and the American Association of Retired Persons.

She returned to Kellogg in 1993.

Mrs. Cain sewed all of her own clothes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George.

Survivors include a sister, Helen May Bitner of Florida.

Don Baldwin Sandpoint

Visitation for Don J. Baldwin, 59, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Coffelt Funeral Service. Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Baldwin, who was born in Prosser, Wash., died Tuesday.

He moved to Sandpoint in 1953 and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1955.

Mr. Baldwin graduated from the University of Idaho in 1961.

He taught school in Lyle, Wash., then was the librarian at Sandpoint High School and was a teacher at Clark Fork (Idaho) High School.

Mr. Baldwin had logged for the Diehl Ranch Co. in Montana and Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and had also worked at P and E Woodworking in Sandpoint.

He opened his own dimensional lumber cutshop, Industrial Repair Service, in 1992.

Mr. Baldwin was a member of the Sandpoint Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Donna; two sons, Jim and Frank Baldwin, both of Sandpoint; a sister, Judy Garvey of Spokane; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
