Obituaries

T Glover Patterson Spokane

Memorial service for T Glover Patterson, 88, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Patterson, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.

Raised in Ferdinand, Idaho, he moved back to Spokane in 1927.

Mr. Patterson graduated in 1938 from Gonzaga University and worked for Westinghouse in the sales department.

He practiced law for a short time before serving with the Judge Advocate General in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

In 1943 he married Elizabeth Harris in Spokane.

In 1946, he moved back to Spokane and practiced law, working for a time with the law firm Humphries, Patterson and Lewis. He was an adjunct professor at Gonzaga University at one time.

He was a 70-year member of First Presbyterian Church, a 60-year member of the Washington Bar Association and was a board member of the Union Gospel Mission.

Mr. Patterson was a former member of the board of trustees of Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska. He was an ordained elder and a stated clerk in the Presbyterian Church, and a member of the North Spokane Kiwanis Club, Spokane Music Festival board and the Mendelssohn Society.

In 1968 he served with the national Presbyterian Church General Assembly.

His wife died in 1987.

Survivors include three daughters, Paulie McCown of Milwaukee, Elizabeth Patterson of La Canada, Calif., and Jane Patterson of Portland; a son, Tom Patterson of Pleasanton, Calif.; a sister, Catherine Crary of Oxford, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Gospel Mission.

John McInerny Colfax, Wash.

Requiem Mass for John Joseph McInerny, 92, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Colfax. A private family inurnment will be held prior to the Mass at the Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McInerny, who was born in Austin, Minn., died Monday.

He was raised in Austin and graduated from a Catholic school there. He graduated in 1930 with a degree in civil engineering from Marquette University in Milwaukee.

Mr. McInerny worked as a civil engineer for the Minnesota Highway Department and the Bureau of Indian Affairs of Montana.

In 1940 he married Marguerite Rohla in Chinook, Mont., and in 1941 they moved to Stevens County.

He served as a county engineer, and in 1957 they moved to Colfax, where he served as Whitman County road engineer until his retirement in 1973.

Mr. McInerny also operated a private surveying company and designed municipal swimming pools.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus of Colfax, Elks Lodge 1794 of Colfax, the Washington State University Cougar Club, and several professional organizations, including the Washington State Association of Engineers and the American Public Works Association.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patricia Simmons and Kathleen Pollart, both of Seattle; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Whitman Hospital Foundation or to the Washington State University Athletic Department.

Joseph Cavender II Spokane

Memorial service for Joseph Wilson Cavender II, 91, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Francis of Assissi Catholic Church. A reception will follow at noon at Casey’s restaurant. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cavender, who was born in Baggs, Wyo., died Tuesday.

He graduated in 1924 from high school in Cody, Wyo., and later from the Colorado School of Mines.

In 1937 Mr. Cavender moved to Spokane from Denver, and married Mary Stack in 1938.

During World War II, he was at the Naval Supply Depot.

He worked for 40 years for the National Lead Co., until his retirement in 1972.

Mr. Cavender was a member of St. Francis of Assissi Parish and United Commercial Travelers Current. He was past president of the North Spokane Rotary, past district governor of Rotary International 5080, and was an advisor for SCORE for several years.

He also served as a Eucharist minister for St. Francis of Assissi Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years; and a son, Joseph Cavender III of Federal Way, Wash.

Stanley Miller Chewelah, Wash.

Funeral service for Stanley J. Miller, 76, will be at 11 a.m. today at Schazenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah. Burial will follow.

Mr. Miller, who was born in Govan, Wash., died Wednesday.

He was raised on a farm in the Summit Valley area and graduated in 1939 from Jenkins High School.

Mr. Miller served as a chief petty officer in the Navy during World War II.

In 1947 he married Barbara Hopp in Odessa, Wash., where they made their home.

He worked for the Odessa Trading Co. and Henry’s Building Service until 1955.

Mr. Miller and his family moved back to Chewelah, where he farmed and drove a school bus. He also worked for a John Deere dealership as a farm equipment mechanic for 25 years before retiring in 1982.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Stanley Miller of Spokane, Ivan Miller of Colbert, and Randy and Raymond Miller, both of Chewelah; four daughters, Janet Tetro of Chewelah, and Shirley Miller, Kathleen Miller and Barbara Ramm, all of Spokane; two brothers, Vernon Miller of Grand Coulee and Donovan Miller of Harrington, Wash.; two sisters, Jean Angstrom and Joyce Bauer, both of Wilbur, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Margaret Black Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Margaret M. Black, 86, will be at 2 p.m. today at the United Church of Christ in Newport. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Black, who was born in Oklahoma, died Monday.

She moved to the Newport area in 1926 and graduated from Newport High School.

In 1935 she married Ernest Black in Newport.

While in high school, she worked for the telephone company and later worked for the Post Office.

Mrs. Black retired from the Post Office after 30 years.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Newport and sang for several years with the church choir. She was also a member of the Soroptomist Club, the bowling league, the art club, Davis Lake Grange, the Newport Eagles and the Pythian Sisters.

Her husband died in 1969.

Survivors include four sisters, Lois Harms of Newton, Kan., Helen Beaubier of Lewiston, and Norma Rednour and Doris Schwab both of Newport; two brothers, John Kliewer of Vienna, Va., and Ken Kliewer of Port Orchards, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Church of Christ or the Spring Valley Mennonite Church.

Dorothy Read Kalispell, Mont.

Private family service for Dorothy Ruth Read, 77, was held.

Mrs. Read, who was born in Demming, Wash., died Feb. 10.

In 1940 she married Warren Read in Coeur d’Alene.

She was a licensed cosmetologist and instructor whose career spanned from 1941 to 1993.

Mrs. Read had managed the Davenport Hotel Salon and had a long-time affiliation with the Abbott Sisters in Bellingham, Rosalia and Tonakset, Wash.

She was also a co-owner of the Wave Shoppe in Spokane and a member of the Spokane’s Jefferson Street Christian Church.

She and her husband moved to Kalispell in the early 1990s.

Her husband died in 1997.

Survivors include two sons, Andrew Read of Chandler, Ariz., and Jim Read of Whitefish, Mont.; three daughters, Pat Guckenberg of Fortine, Mont., Kelly Yamane of Toppenish, Wash., and Shirley Mullen of Midwest City, Okla.; a sister, Betty Horton of Wenatchee; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Sally Oien Nine Mile Falls

Memorial service for Sally L. Oien, 75, will be at 4 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mrs. Oien, who was born in Greensboro, N.C., died Wednesday.

She graduated from Montacello High School in Brown Summit, N.C., and from the Flint School of Photography and the Wheelen School of Photography.

In 1946 she married Peter Oien in Spokane, and they made their home here.

Mrs. Oien was a division manager for the Sears and Roebuck Co.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Barbara Gamble of Tacoma; a brother, Herbert Burton of Greensboro; and three grandsons.

Idella Copenhaver Wilbur, Wash.

Memorial service for Idella June Copenhaver, 77, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wilbur Community Presbyterian Church. Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Copenhaver, who was born in Wilbur, died Tuesday.

She graduated in 1939 from Wilbur High School and married Guy Copenhaver in Colville, Wash., that same year.

They lived on the Copenhaver farm northeast of Creston, Wash., until 1975 when they retired and moved to Wilbur.

Mrs. Copenhaver, a homemaker, was a member of the City Club in Creston, Wash., and the Wilbur Community Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Gary Copenhaver of Spokane, Don Copenhaver of Creston and Bill Copenhaver of Wilbur; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilbur Ambulance Fund in Wilbur.

Lou Ella ‘Jerry’ Sala Spokane

Memorial service for Lou Ella May “Jerry” Sala, 82, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sala, who was born in Centuria, Wis., died Monday.

She and her husband owned the Boat Drive-in at Smelterville, Idaho, in the late 1940s and early ‘50s. Later, they started the City Variety Store in Osburn, Idaho, before retiring and moving to Spokane in 1968.

Mrs. Sala was a watercolorist, and a member and former treasurer of the Spokane Watercolor Society.

Her husband of 59 years, George, died in 1997.

Survivors include a son, Stephen Sala of Spokane; four sisters, Phemia Penny, Mina Swanson and Helen Brainard, all of Kellogg, and Florence Hope of Portland; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Washington State Nurses Foundation or Hospice of Spokane.

Corliss Kane Spokane

Memorial service for Corliss L. Kane, 73, will be at 1 p.m. today at Messiah Lutheran Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kane, who was born and raised on the family dairy farm in Coleman, Wis., died Tuesday.

He worked on the farm until he was drafted into the Army.

In 1948 he moved to Spokane and in 1950 married Benita Harris.

For more than 30 years, Mr. Kane was partner in C & C Building Service in Spokane.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and the International Order of Foresters.

Survivors include his wife, Benita; two daughters, Arlene Kane Smith of Lake Forest Park, Wash., and Shirley Kane Whittaker of Spokane; a son, Brent Kane of Bothell, Wash.; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or the Messiah Lutheran Church.

Bernard Flood Spokane

Funeral service for Bernard L. Flood, 92, will be at 11 a.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Flood, who was born in Reardan, Wash., died Sunday.

He graduated from Reardan High School and later from Kinman Business University.

Mr. Flood worked for Standard Oil Co. and later operated the family farm in the Mondovi, Wash., area for many years until his retirement.

He was a 33-year resident of Spokane.

His wife of 50 years, Veronia Flood, died in 1978.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Jane Bradford; and three sons, Jared, Andrew and Michael Iverson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Whitworth College.

Viola Messer Spokane

Funeral service for Viola C. Messer, 81, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private interment will be held.

Mrs. Messer, who was born in Elcho, Wis., died Tuesday.

In 1952, she and her husband started Messer’s IGA in Spokane, which is now Excell.

Survivors include her husband, Jesse; two daughters, Catherine Mulvania and Patricia Kane, both of Deer Park; a brother, Glen Williams of Libby, Mont.; seven grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.

Pamela Crump Valleyford

Memorial service for Pamela Rae Crump, 53, will be at 3 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Crump, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.

She worked for the Liberty School District as a social worker.

Mrs. Crump was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church and Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

Her husband, James Crump, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Douglas Crump, and a daughter, Kimberly Crump, both of Spokane; her father, Wayne Osborn of Des Moines, Wash.; a brother, Bill Osborn of Keller, Texas; a sister, Becky Buchanan of Federal Way, Wash.; and several grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Cecelia Ruebke Spokane

Service for Cecelia Marie Ruebke, 82, will be today at 11 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Ms. Ruebke, who was born in Sacramento, died Saturday.

She lived in Coeur d’Alene for 31 years and worked for Montgomery Ward before moving to Spokane in 1991.

Ms. Ruebke was a volunteer at Kootenai Medical Center and was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene.

Survivors include a son, John Ruebke of Spokane; three daughters, Linda Jensen of Vancouver, Wash., Nancy James of Spokane and Mary Shephard of Oldtown, Idaho; a sister, Rose Wilson of Kansas; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Esther Peterson Tacoma

Memorial service for Esther P. Peterson, 81, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Nicholas Antiochian in Spokane. Gaffney Cassedy Allen and Buckley King Funeral Home in Tacoma is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Peterson, who was born in Pony, Mont., died Saturday.

She was raised in the Pony and Bozeman, Mont., area and then moved to Butte, Mont., where she worked as a beautician.

Mrs. Peterson moved to Spokane in 1952 and operated the Select Coiffure beauty salon on the North Side.

In 1994, she moved to the Tacoma area.

Survivors include a son, Doug Peterson of Orting, Wash.; a daughter, Joleen Canwell of University Place, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Darlien Holl Otis Orchards

Memorial service for Darlien G. Holl, 77, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Otis Orchards. Burial was held at Fairmount Memorial Park. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Holl, who was born in Uniontown, Wash., died Tuesday.

She was formerly of Valley, Wash., and moved to Otis Orchards in 1997.

Mrs. Holl worked as a waitress, and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Hubert; a daughter, Hazel Allen of Spokane; two sisters, Bernice McGrew of Beeville, Texas, and Roberta Bacon of Kent, Wash.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Olive Erickson Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Olive Lucille Erickson, 90, will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel. Inurnment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg.

Mrs. Erickson, who was born in Iowa, died Saturday.

She moved to the Silver Valley in 1937 and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles in 1949.

Survivors include a son, Chuck Erickson of Pasco; two daughters, Margie Haddock of Coeur d’Alene and Fran Chase of Massachusetts; two brothers, Art Acuff of Lacey, Wash., and Earl Acuff of North Carolina; a sister, Betty Barber of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Peggy Milburn Deer Park

Visitation for Peggy L. Milburn, 78, will be from noon to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Greenwood Memorial Park.

Miss Milburn, who was born in Reardan, Wash., died Wednesday.

She was a 27-year resident of Lakeland Village. Most recently she lived in a group home in Deer Park.

Miss Milburn is survived by a sister, Julia Haddock of Moscow, Idaho.

Walt Burgess Medford, Ore.

Private service for Roy Walter Burgess, 75, will be held at a later date. Private interment will take place at the Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point, Ore. Pearl Funeral Services in Medford is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Burgess, who was born in Biggar, Saskatchewan, died Monday.

He moved to Oregon with his family in 1924 and moved to Spokane in the 1930s.

Mr. Burgess enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the beginning of World War II, serving as a fighter pilot. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 13 Oak Leaf clusters.

In 1945 he married Betty Kapel in Spokane.

Mr. Burgess also served during the Korean War before retiring in 1963 with the rank of major.

From 1963 to 1969, Mr. Burgess owned and operated two Spokane Chevron service stations.

Mr. Burgess moved to Medford in 1969 and purchased the Royal Crest Motel. He later worked for the Medford School District as a bus driver and as supervisor of transportation until he retired in 1982.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Michael Burgess of San Bernardino, Calif., Stephen Burgess of Placentia, Calif., Mark Burgess of Beaverton, Ore., and Scott Burgess of Philomath, Ore.; a brother, Osmer Burgess of Cottage Grove, Ore.; two sisters, Mary Cleland and Margaret Jones, both of Portland; and 13 grandchildren.

Michael Higgins, M.D. Bothell, Wash.

No service will be held for Michael H. Higgins, M.D., 62, at his request. Bleitz Funeral Home in Seattle is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Higgins, who was born in Boston, died Jan. 28.

He graduated from Central Washington University and completed his medical residency training at Stanford Medical Center in California.

Dr. Higgins moved to Spokane in 1969 and practiced medicine in Spokane as a urologist.

He was active in the Spokane Medical Society, and was a member of the Spokane Club.

Dr. Higgins retired to the Seattle area in 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Pat; a son, Scott Higgins of Seattle; a daughter, Cynthia La Vallie of Edmonds, Wash.; a brother, Pete Higgins of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; and two grandchildren.

Margie Speights Whitaker Spokane

No service will be held for Margie Speights Whitaker, 73, at her request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Whitaker, a native of Keytesville, Mo., died Saturday.

She graduated from high school in Bremerton, and married Gale Speights in 1940.

Mrs. Whitaker moved to Spokane in 1952. She was a retired saleswoman.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Pam Mahar of Kalispell, Mont.; a sister, Lucy Moore of California; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Helen Wilson Hayden, Idaho

Service for Helen I. Wilson, 57, will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Wilson, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday.

She attended schools in Spokane and then moved to North Idaho and attended Kellogg and Kootenai High schools.

Mrs. Wilson moved to the Coeur d’Alene area, and managed the Pines Nursery and Floral Shop in Dalton Gardens from 1975 to 1981.

She moved to Shelton, Wash., and owned a floral shop from 1989 to 1996 before moving to Hayden.

Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Gerald; two sons, Brian Wilson of Hayden and Phillip Wilson of Tumwater, Wash.; a daughter, Lori Dailey of Spokane; a brother, John Christoph of Spokane; a sister, Donna Roberson of California; and 10 grandchildren.

Pearl Speicher Spokane

No service will be held for Pearl R. Speicher, 76, at the request of the family. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Speicher, who was a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Tuesday.

Survivors include two sisters, Eleanor Dittner of Spokane and Pauline McConnachie of Worley, Idaho; and a brother, George Speicher of Spokane.
