Obituaries

David Brown Coeur d’Alene

No service will be held for David L. Brown, 85, at his request. Yates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brown, who was born in Oklahoma, died Tuesday.

He grew up in Oklahoma and worked on the family farm and as a welder. He moved to California in 1952 and worked in naval shipyards for two years and then became a shop welder.

Mr. Brown retired and returned to Oklahoma in 1980. He moved to North Idaho in 1990.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Alyce; two sons, Charles Brown of California, and Larry Brown of Coeur d’Alene; two sisters, Cora McLean and Lula McGehee, both of Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Harvey Vig Dalton Gardens, Idaho

Private service for Harvey William Vig, 84, will be held later at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Vig, who was born in North Dakota, died Monday.

He grew up in South Dakota and moved to Dalton Gardens in 1934.

Mr. Vig worked at Kaiser Aluminum’s Trentwood rolling mill as a furnace operator for 32 years before retiring in 1975.

He was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Lodge and the Coeur d’Alene First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Nona; two daughters, Doris Baillie of Dalton Gardens and Kathy Butterfield of Pasco; two sons, Dale Vig of Spokane and David Vig of Careywood, Idaho; three brothers, Clinton Vig of Wisconsin, Carl Vig of Spokane and Chester Vig of Dalton Gardens; a sister, Violet Bedford of Deer Park; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Merle Wellman Spokane

Memorial service for Merle L. Wellman, 78, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Life Center Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wellman, a 60-year Spokane resident, died Friday.

He was born in Marysville, Wash., and served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Wellman was a self-employed contractor for trucking companies.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; a son, Larry Wellman of Spokane; two daughters, Enola Wellman and Diann Ramsey, both of Spokane; two brothers, Emmett Wellman of Spokane and LaVerne Wellman of Kellogg; two sisters, Bernadine Salois of Fallon, Nev., and Charlotte Fuechsel of Kellogg; and two grandsons.

Guyanne Jensen Spokane

Burial for Guyanne G. Jensen, 58, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Owyhee Cemetery in Adrian, Ore. Sutton Memorial Funeral Home in Kingman, Ariz., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jensen, who was born in Portland, died Thursday in Kingman, Ariz., where she was on a business trip.

She was raised on the family ranch in Adrian.

Mrs. Jensen moved to Warden, Wash., in 1963 and farmed. She founded an onion storage and packing firm.

In 1989 she moved to Spokane where she started a small trucking business.

Survivors include two daughters, Kim Jensen of Moses Lake and Glenda Ripley of Spokane; a son, Andy Jensen of Warden; and eight grandchildren.

Ellsworth Brown Sandpoint

Visitation for Ellsworth D. Brown, 83, will be held Friday from noon to 5 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Brown, who was born in Nebraska, died Monday.

He grew up and graduated from high school in Nebraska and moved to North Idaho in 1945, settling on a farm near Sandpoint.

He was a farmer and raised cattle, and owned a lumber mill and planer.

Mr. Brown was a member of the First Christian Church in Sandpoint, Sandpoint Eagles Aerie and the Shoreline Association, where he had served as president.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; three stepchildren, Sandra Lasso and Bill Kindt, both of Sagle, Idaho, and Don Kindt of Oregon; and several nieces and nephews.

Winifred ‘Faye’ Lundy Spokane

Private family service for Winifred Faith “Faye” Lundy, 87, will be today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Lundy, who was born in Tillamook, Ore., died Tuesday.

As a child, she moved to Kellogg, Idaho, and worked in her mother’s boarding and rooming house.

In 1930 she moved to Spokane and worked as a clerk for The Crescent department store from 1950 until her retirement in 1974.

Mrs. Lundy was a member of the North Hill Lodge of Eastern Star and El Katif Shrine Tours and Hobnailers.

During the 1950s she served in various capacities as an officer for the Spokane Council of Parent Teacher Association.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice Duval of Coeur d’Alene; a halfbrother, David Robertson of Coeur d’Alene; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Gospel Mission or the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Lucie Carnahan Veradale

Memorial service for Lucie A. Carnahan, 70, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Carnahan, who was born and raised in Regina, Mont., died Sunday.

She moved to Washington state in 1958 and has resided in Veradale for the past 26 years.

Mrs. Carnahan worked for Columbia Lighting for more than 10 years and retired in 1982.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Mark; three daughters, Marcia Babington of Mead, and Emily McKeen and Tamie Jo Allen, both of Spokane; two sons, Larry Carnahan of Newman Lake and Fred Carnahan of Nine Mile Falls; a brother, Armond Tremblay of Malta, Mont.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Duane Everts Deer Lake, Wash.

Service for Duane L. Everts, 60, was Monday at Riverside Mausoleum. Burial followed at Greenwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Everts, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday.

He served in the Navy and later worked at Materne Brothers Construction and N.A. Degerstrom.

Mr. Everts was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 370.

Survivors include his wife, Joanna; a son, John Wallace; two daughters, Judy Scalf and Jaque Dashiell; a brother, Rick Everts; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Robert Davidson Spokane

Funeral Mass for Robert James Davidson, 75, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. HennesseySmith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Davidson, who died Tuesday, was born in Colfax, Wash.

He served in the Army Air Corps as a bombardier during World War II.

Mr. Davidson owned and operated Bob’s Excell Food in Spokane for 27 years.

In 1944 he married Margaret Guadanol.

He was a member and chairman of the board of URM Store, Inc., served on the board of Rosauer’s Supermarkets and as director emeritus of Inland Northwest Bank.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Pat Davidson, and a daughter, Lynda Parham, both of Spokane; seven granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity School.

Gladys Grove Laguna Hills, Calif.

Inurnment for Gladys R. Grove, 97, was held at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Grove, who was born in Chewelah, Wash., died Dec. 18.

In 1929 she married Richard Grove, a Spokane dentist, in Spokane.

She was a prominent hostess and was involved with many charitable activities. Mrs. Grove was, at one time, State President of the Dental Auxiliary.

The couple moved to California in the early 1960s.

Her husband died in 1967 and she moved in the mid 1970s to Laguna Hills.

Survivors include a grandson, Michael Robbins of Longview, Wash.; a granddaughter, Kimberly Robbins of Tacoma.

Glen Ramsey Rockford

Memorial service for Glen R. Ramsey, 76, will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Spokane Valley Elks.

Mr. Ramsey, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.

He was a pilot for Pan American in his early career and later flew for various individuals and corporations in the Spokane area during his farming career.

Mr. Ramsey was a member of the Rockford Lions Club, American Legion Post 165, Spokane Valley Elks and the Brotherhood of Friends.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; a daughter, Carolyn Brain of San Diego; two sons, Chris Ramsey of Rockford and Roy Ramsey of Spokane; a brother, James Ramsey of Fort Bragg, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Rockford Lions Club.

Ruth Weber Odessa, Wash.

Service for Ruth H. Weber, 92, was Monday at the Heritage United Church of Christ in Odessa. Burial followed at the Odessa Cemetery in Odessa.

Mrs. Weber, who was born in Odessa, died Wednesday.

She graduated in 1921 from Odessa High School and later from Cheney Normal School.

Mrs. Weber was a member of Heritage United Church of Christ and the Odessa Grange.

Her husband, Marcus Weber, died in 1970.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Schott; two sisters, Johanna Sandvig of Bellingham and Esther Hansen of Puyallup, Wash.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Odessa Health Care Foundation or to the Heritage United Church of Christ.

Bruce McPhaden Spokane

Memorial service for Bruce H. McPhaden, 80, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Rockwood Manor Chapel. Private inurnment was held. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McPhaden, who was born in Minneapolis, died Sunday.

He graduated in 1935 from Concrete (Wash.) High School and from Antoich College in Ohio in 1942 with a degree in Liberal Arts.

Mr. McPhaden worked from 1942 to 1946 for General Motors Corp. as a production worker, foreman and superintendent.

From 1946 to 1961, he worked for Morris Bean and Company where he was the vice president and plant manager. In 1961 he went to worked for SKS Die Casting Company in Berkeley, Calif., where he served as president and general manager.

Mr. McPhaden came to work at Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation in 1963, serving in a variety of management positions both in the United States and Brazil.

From 1963 to 1965 he served as production superintendent and administrative manager at Kaiser Trentwood. He managed Kaiser’s wire and cable operation in Brazil from 1965 to 1969 and then for one year he served as manager of the Rod, Bar and Wire Division.

In 1970 he became Kaiser’s Northwest Public Affairs Manager which included administration of power contracts with the Bonneville Power Administration. In 1974 he was appointed vice president of Aluminum Division.

He retired in 1982 from Kaiser Aluminum.

Mr. McPhaden then was the President of Bruce McPhaden and Associates, Inc., a general business consulting firm in energy, legislative and regulatory affairs.

He was involved in the Washington Commission for the Humanities and served on the advisory council for Washington Basic Health Care.

Mr. McPhaden had been chairman of Gov. Dixy Lee Ray’s Economic Advisory Council, president and chairman of the Executive Committee of United for Washington, a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for the Association of Washington Business, a member of the Board of Directors for the Spokane Inland Empire Foundation, vice president on the Board of Trustees at Antioch University, chairman on the Board of Trustees at Eastern Washington University, a member of the Board of Regents at Gonzaga University, president and member of the Executive Committee of the Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Trustees at the Spokane Area Development Council, a member of the Executive Committee of Expo ‘74, campaign chairman of the United Way of Spokane County, director of the Old National Bank of Washington, chairman of Seattle First National Bank Eastern Washington Advisory, and chairman of Washington Health Care Project Commission.

Survivors include his wife of six years, Patsy Bacon; two sons, Douglas McPhaden of Sterling, Va., and David McPhaden of Newark, Ohio; three daughters, Lesley McPhaden of Washington, D.C., Jean McPhaden of Melbourne, Fla., and Ellen Vaughn of Issaquah, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Gladys Dean Greenacres

Private burial for Gladys S. Dean, 84, will be at Pines Cemetery. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dean, a homemaker and lifetime Spokane resident, died Monday.

She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile, several area bowling leagues and the Postal Workers Auxiliary.

Her husband, Thomas Dean, died in 1994.

Survivors include a son, John Dean of Spokane; and a grandson.
