Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: I keep in touch with many friends and relatives who have moved away from our hometown. When reading the local newspapers, I often spot an article or news item about which they would be interested. Whether it’s a story about an honor bestowed, an engagement or wedding announcement, an account of a sports event, a writeup of a new business or new babies, even obituaries, all are appreciated.

Everyone is delighted with a copy of a recent news clipping about someone they know. This simple gesture has brought many replies like “You made my day,” “I’m always so happy to see your cards and letters in my mail,” plus lots of thankyous,

I really enjoy and use your many hints featured in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Your contribution is always a “must read.” Thank you. - Janet Bushnell, Saint Charles, Mo.

Dear Heloise: Have you ever backed out of your driveway in the middle of winter and gotten stuck on a patch of ice?

If you keep a bag of cat litter (the clay-based type) in your car, then if you get stuck on ice, you could pour the cat litter around the tire and that will provide traction for the wheels. Then you can get moving. - Clare Carpenter, age 12, Tamarac Middle School, Troy, N.Y.
