Bob Cabildo Honored For Community Work

FROM FOR THE RECORD (Tuesday, January 27, 1998): Correction Name wrong: Ben Cabildo has received two awards for community service in Spokane, A headline in Sunday’s newspaper incorrectly listed his first name.

Ben Cabildo has received two awards for selfless dedication in community work.

Community Colleges of Spokane awarded him a certificate for being “The Unity in Our Community Trailblazer for Diversity.” He was also chosen as one of eight recipients of the Filipino American National Historical Society VIP Award for his accomplishments in enhancing the Filipino-American community throughout the state.

Cabildo, a registered representative with American Express Financial Advisors, founded Seattle’s International District DropIn Center in 1972.

Jonathan Cummins, a senior at Mead High School, recently earned his Eagle Scout rank with Troop 226 and Life rank with Troop 200. He is the son of Kay and Carolyn Kempe, Spokane, and David and Jolene Cummins, Phoenix.

Donna Talley was named a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions Club International Foundation for “her commitment to serving the world community.”

Talley is the only non-member woman to receive this honor, the highest given by the Lions.

Her husband, Jim Talley, is the group’s district governor.

Hunter Abell was selected Student of the Year for 1997-98 at Inchelium (Wash.) High School for his grade point average, character, extracurricular activities, attitude and achievement.

He is the son of Dr. Larry and Lacie Abell.

Valorie Marschall was named a member of The American Academy of Distinguished Students, based on her grade point average, recommendations, leadership and service.

Marschall, a 1969 graduate of East Valley High School, is majoring in business communications at Eastern Washington University.

Matt McGuire was recently promoted to senior airman with the Air Force. The 1995 graduate of Eastern Washington University is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James McGuire, Spokane.

Melody Clark, daughter of Sally Braithwaite-Marshall and Rich Clark, Spokane, was one of 100 participants chosen to attend the 1997 Washington Teen Leadership Program.

Also, for the third consecutive year, Clark was named in Who’s Who Among American High School Students.

Daniel Meyers, a 1995 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, has been selected as a United Parcel Service Scholar and recipient of a $3,000 scholarship.

Myers, a junior at Whitman College, was one of 10 students statewide to share $30,000 in scholarship money.

He is the son of Roger and Linda Meyers, Spokane.

John Paxson, lead graphic designer at Eastern Washington University, received the Award of Excellence from the University and College Designers Association.

The national award was for his book cover design for “Spells for Not Dying Again,” a book of poems by Diana O’Hehir, published by EWU Press.

Since arriving at EWU in 1995, Paxson has received the Award of Excellence in the designer association’s offset poster category, and Bronze Awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education in the Visual Print and Designer of the Year categories.

Nate Crumet, a St. George’s High School student, has been selected as a Hellyer Junior Naturalist by Northwest Trek Wildlife Park.

Crumet was chosen from 48 applicants statewide, based on his interest in and aptitude for the natural sciences.

This award named for the park’s founders and benefactors, David and Connie Hellyer.

Marine Lance Cpl. James Weathers, Medical Lake, was meritoriously promoted to his present rank while serving with Supply School Company at the Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

He is a 1995 graduate of Medical Lake High School and the son of James and Stephanie Weathers.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class David Luleich received his sixth Gold Wreath Award for recruiting excellence, and a Letter of Commendation.

Luleich, a 1989 graduate of Ferris High School, is stationed at the Navy Recruiting District in Omaha, Neb.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class William Blackwell has been promoted to his present rank while serving at Naval Air station, Barbers Point, Hawaii.

Blackwell, a 1995 graduate of North Central High School, is the son of Marsha Corzine.

John Coley and C. Carr Killin III, Boy Scout leaders in Davenport, Wash., received Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Awards for their work with Scouting in rural communities.

Air Force Lt. Col. Karen Bradway received the Meritorious Service Medal - for the fifth time - for outstanding non-combat achievement in service to the United States.

Bradway is the daughter of Cheryl Tallant of Chattaroy.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Cassandra Van Houtan received a Letter of Commendation for outstanding performance as fire-watch dispatcher aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.

She is the daughter of Joseph and Judy Van Houtan and a 1990 graduate of Mead High School.

William Lambert III, a Spokane author, has been chosen to have his biographical sketch included in the 1997 edition of Who’s Who in Entertainment.

Lambert, who has more than 20 published novels, with translations in 12 countries, was also included in Who’s Who in the West.

He is the son of Olive and William Lambert of Spokane.

Susan McLellan, a graduate student at Washington State University-Spokane, received a $500 Branch Campus Leadership Award.

McLellan is a 1995 graduate of Eastern Washington University.

Brock Salzman, a counselor at East Valley Middle School, received a master’s degree in education from Washington State University, graduating summa cum laude in psychology and communication.

Brian Hobson received a $750 Homes J. Dana Scholarship from the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University, where he is a senior.

He is the son of Richard Hobson, Spokane, and Kristi Basse, Port Orchard, Wash.

Clara Demmer, Newman Lake, was nominated as Poet of the Year for 1997 and Poet of Merit by the International Society of Poets.
