Van Halen singer cancels

SORRY. No Diamond Dave for us. David Lee Roth has canceled his Aug. 20 show at Silver Mountain due to low ticket sales.

What? People don’t want to hear a 49-year-old man sing “Hot for Teacher”? Without Eddie Van Halen?

For Roth refunds, go to www.silvermt.com or call (800) 204-6428, or, if you bought your tickets through TicketsWest, call 325-SEAT.

BrewsFest was hopping

Meanwhile, Silver Mountain was filled to the brim for BrewsFest on July 30.

In fact, Silver Mountain is reporting a record-breaking crowd of right about 2,000.

That’s up from past BrewsFest crowds of around 1,200 to 1,500, said Stephen Lane of Silver Mountain.

Lane did not have exact numbers for the concert, only for the number of gondola-riders who made it up to the 5,700 ft.-elevation venue that day: 2,933. Not all of those were concert-goers, however.

Meanwhile, it appears that Styx has more commercial oomph than Roth these days. Good crowds are expected for today’s Styx show at the amphitheater. Country star Phil Vassar follows on Aug. 27.

For tickets and info, go to www.silvermt.com or call (800) 204-6428.

Learn ballet from a master

Charles Askegard, principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, will teach a series of master classes in Spokane beginning next Sunday at Ballet Arts Academy, 416 W. Sprague Ave.

Askegard has also danced with Mikhail Baryshnikov in the American Ballet Theatre.

“I had some pull in getting him here to Spokane,” said Dodie Askegard, director of the Ballet Arts Academy and artistic director of the Theater Ballet of Spokane. “He’s my younger brother.”

Some of his students will be members of the Theatre Ballet of Spokane – but the classes are also open to all ballet dancers.

Sounds like a world-class opportunity for dancers. Class sizes are limited and you must pre-register. For information, call the Ballet Arts Academy at 838-5705.

An Interplayers gala

The Interplayers Ensemble may be “dark” (in theater parlance) for the summer, but the joint will be lit up on Friday night.

The Friends of Interplayers is holding a fund-raiser called “A Summer Gala: Artists Helping Theatre” on Friday beginning at 6:30 p.m.

For $40 (or $75 per couple), you get champagne, hors d’oeuvres, raffle prizes and auctions with items including a car (a ‘94 Pontiac Grand Prix).

There will also be a cabaret performance featuring many familiar names from Spokane stages, including Kathie Doyle-Lipe, Jan Neumann, Abbey Crawford-Heim, Roger Welch, Mike Hynes, David Gigler, Melody Deatherage, Heather O’Brien, Michael J. Gray, Katie Dietrick, Darin Jones, Stephanie Brush and Molly Allen. Troy Nickerson directs and Gary Laing is the musical director.

All proceeds will benefit Interplayers, Spokane’s original resident professional theater, as it enters its 25th season.

For tickets call Friends of Interplayers at 455-7529. Interplayers is at 174 S. Howard.

The Shambhalla fund

Speaking of fund-raisers at Interplayers, a fund-raiser at the theater on July 28 netted $2,021 to help Robert Shambhalla with his medical bills.

As the organizers noted, it was a good start.
