Fig Tree presents dialogue series

The Fig Tree, a monthly Christian newspaper, is presenting its Faith in Action Dialogue, 2005 during three events on Friday.

Peter Storey, the former chaplain to Nelson Mandela when he was imprisoned at Robben Island Prison, will discuss “Where in the World is the Media?” during a Deepening Our Roots benefit breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 518 W. Third Ave. This event will be catered by Christ Kitchen; admission is by donation.

At noon, Storey will speak about “Without Truth, No Healing; Without Forgiveness, No Future” at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 611 S. Garfield St. The event will be catered by the women of Highland Park United Methodist Church; the cost is $12.

The evening event will be at 6 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 316 E. 24th Ave. Storey’s topic will be “From the Fringe of an Empire: Issues of Church and State.” The dinner, which will be catered by Christ Kitchen, is $18.

A combined ticket for both the lunch and dinner events is $25. Admission to the talks only is $10.

Icon writing workshop

SS Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Church and St. Gregorios Syrian Orthodox Church of India, 2803 N. Lincoln St., are presenting a series of icon writing workshops taught by Father Bill O’Brian starting June 10 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Gregorios, 2803 N. Lincoln St.

The cost is $30. All supplies will be provided including brushes, wood boards and paints. Participants will be able to take home their finished icons, and also can display them at On Sacred Grounds during September’s First Friday Downtown Spokane Art Walk.

Open house

Northwest Christian Schools is presenting an open house Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Christian Singles

Singles in their 20s, 30s and 40s are invited to a Memorial Day weekend barbecue at 2 p.m. today at Valley Mission Park, 11123 E. Mission Ave.
