Kitchen cabinets can be collectibles

Larry Cox King Features Syndicate

Q: We recently remodeled our kitchen and replaced all of the cabinets, which were manufactured by Sears sometime during the 1940s. They are in excellent condition, with porcelain tops and rounded edges. Where can I sell them? —Phyllis, Yonkers, N.Y.

A: Although your cabinets aren’t quite old enough to be truly collectible, I suggest you contact a dealer who specializes in cabinetry. Gary Hahn is the owner of Muff’s Antiques, a mail-order source for kitchen-cabinet hardware and other related materials, and might be able to help you. His address is 135 South Glassell St., Orange, CA 92866. If all else fails, look in your Yonkers telephone book for salvage companies.

Q: I have a large stamp collection, and I would like information about where I can sell it. — Alvina, Clara City, Minn.

A: Stamp collections are notoriously difficult to sell. With that said, let me recommend two established dealers that might be able to advise you. Robert M. Weisz buys, sells and appraises U.S. stamps. His address is 4562 North Austin Ave., Chicago, IL 60630. Bill Berry specializes in stamps, covers and postal-history memorabilia. His address is 6950 Lain Road, Hornell, NY 14843.

Q: About three years ago, I bought a Lamb Chop hand puppet at a yard sale. Is it worth anything? — Kim, Canada

A: Shari Lewis was a ventriloquist who made her national TV debut on an “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts” broadcast in 1952. Among the most enduring characters she created was a sassy sock puppet she named Lamb Chop. According to a Tucson toy collector, your puppet is worth about $20 in good-to-excellent condition.
