Hans Moldenhauer subject of memorial lecture

The Spokesman-Review

The subject of this year’s Hans Moldenhauer Memorial Lecture at Whitworth College will be the late musicologist Moldenhauer himself.

Donivan Johnson, composer and music instructor for northeastern Washington’s Selkirk School District, will discuss Moldenhauer’s life and legacy in a centennial program Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Whitworth’s Music Building Recital Hall.

Moldenhauer was born in Germany in 1906 and immigrated to the United States in 1938. After serving in the U.S. Army, he came to Spokane and became the first student to attend Whitworth under the G.I. Bill.

He earned a B.A. in music in 1945 and went on to assemble one of the world’s great collections of musical manuscripts and other documents, much of it from living composers, before his death in 1987.

Whitworth’s annual Moldenhauer Lecture, inaugurated by Johnson in 1994, focuses on the role of contemporary music and composers.

This year’s presentation, dealing with his work updating Whitworth’s Moldenhauer Archives, will include photographs and audio recordings of Moldenhauer. A reception following the lecture will feature a display of scores, books and original sketches from the archives.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information call 777-3280.

Johnson also will discuss works in the archive during Verne Windham’s classical music program Monday morning on KPBX-FM (91.1).
