WSU chef earns silver medal

“ Chef Jaime Herrera of Washington State University Dining Services recently won a silver medal at the National Association of College and University Food Services Regional Conference in Alaska. Chefs participating in the conference were instructed to make a chicken dish. This is the first time a WSU representative has participated in the competition.

Glen Water of Spokane has been named to the fall semester dean’s list at the University of Notre Dame. Students must be in the top 30 percent of students to be named to the list.

“ Several Spokane residents recently graduated from ITT Technical Institute.

The graduates receive an associate’s degree unless otherwise indicated: Patrick Beal, information technology/multimedia; Joe Buchmann, bachelor’s in digital entertainment and game design; Bill Jorgensen, computer and electronics engineering technology; Michael Luce, information technology/multimedia; Brano Milovanovic, bachelor’s in information system security; and Michael West, bachelor’s in information systems security.

“ The cities of Cheney, Airway Heights and Medical Lake, along with the town’s businesses and school districts, named the recipients of several awards at the recent Best of the West Plains event. The nominating organizations, winners and awards are as follows:

City of Airway Heights: Fire Chief John Schoen, public service award.

City of Cheney: Fire Chief John Montague, public service award.

City of Medical Lake: Medical Lake Fire Department Lt. John Merrick, public service award.

Cheney School District: Susan Mattoon of Windsor Elementary, K-6 educator of the year; Karen Morse of Cheney Middle School, grades 7-12 educator of the year.

Medical Lake School District: Ryan Grant of Michael Anderson Elementary and Patti Headlee of Medical Lake Elementary, K-6 educators of the year; Jim Cattin of Medical Lake Middle School, grades 7-12 educator of the year. Eastern Washington University: and Dana Elder, chair of the English Department, educator of the year.

West Plains Chamber of Commerce: Spokane Airport Ramada Inn, business of the year; Rita Santillanes of the Best Western Peppertree Inn, business person of the year; Maureen Strom, volunteer of the year.

“Three area students have recently been awarded scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year at Washington State University

Jordan Gainey was awarded a $500 Honors College M.E. and Maxine Johnson Scholarship. Gainey, a 2003 graduate of Ferris High School, is the daughter of Brenda and Ronald Gainey of Erie, Colo.

Ethan Smith was awarded a $1,000 Sidney R. Buckley and Daughter Honors Scholarship. Smith, a 2003 graduate of Cheney High School, is the son of Clare and Michael Smith of Cheney.

Jordan Bush has been awarded a $1,000 Leff Family Honors College Education Abroad Scholarship. Bush, the son the Kimberly and Michael Bush of Spokane, is a 2002 graduate of West Linn (Ore.) High School.

Idaho

“ Two Coeur d’Alene residents were recently awarded $1,000 Toni Robideaux Scholarships from the Spokane Advertising Federation. Jamie Murphy is a graphic design/fine arts and theater major at North Idaho College. Krista Brand is a recent graduate of the North Idaho College graphic design program.

“ University of Idaho sophomore Celadon Wood of Moscow was selected to have a dance she choreographed performed in the Gala Performance at the American College Dance Festival Northwest Conference in Wyoming. Hers was one of 11 works selected from 40 submissions. Her dance is called “Far From Reality and Open to Suggestions: Escape of the Women.” Her dance also was selected as the runner up for the national competition American College Dance Festival in May.
