Students cited by Hispanic program

Two local high school students recently were named Outstanding Hispanic High School Students by the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program. The students are Matthew Rivera of Rogers High School and A.J. Garcia of Lewis and Clark High School.

Recipients are chosen from Hispanics who had high scores on the PSAT/NMSQT test. The program then requests academic information, including grade-point average, from each student’s school before awarding the recognition.

• Three area residents recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Air Force Airman David Blair, son of Mike Blair of Spokane Valley, is a 2002 graduate of Northwest Christian School.

Air Force Airman Jacob Ballard, a 2006 graduate of Liberty High School, is the son of Joesph and Sara Ballard of Spokane.

Air Force Airman Adam Bessey, a 2006 graduate of Deer Park High School, is the son of Donald Bessey of Deer Park.

• Cory Lund of Medical Lake recently attended the Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Aerospace and Technology Honors Camp at the University of Oklahoma and Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. Only 500 cadets were chosen to attend the honors camp.

Admission for the high school cadets was based on grade-point average, leadership ability and being enrolled in college-prep math and science classes.

Lund is the son of Robert and Linda Lund of Medical Lake.

Idaho

• Heather Beehner of Wallace recently was selected the Student of the Month by the Coeur d’Alene Rotary Club. Beehner, a 2006 graduate of Wallace High School, is a pre-medicine major at North Idaho College.

• Students from North Idaho high schools competed in the recent Math Contest hosted by North Idaho College. Students were tested in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus and probability.

Seniors competed against nonseniors in Division I for large schools and Division II for small schools. First-place winners in each category received plaques and a tuition waiver to attend NIC.

Division I seniors: first place - Tiffany Beebe, Lakeland High School; second place – Wyatt Pearson, Sandpoint High School; third place – Brad Hull, Lake City High School; honorable mention – Stephanie Bell, Sandpoint High School.

Division II seniors: first place – Alex Kramar, Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy; second place – Julian Lemke, Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy; third place – Brett Hitchcock, Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy; honorable mention – Anthony King, Immaculate Conception Academy, and Derek Renz, Potlatch High School.

Division I nonseniors: first place – Ryan Williams, Sandpoint High School; second place – Jill Jacobs, Sandpoint High School; third place – Verena Rossbach, Lakeland High School.

Division II non-seniors: first place – Susanna Lynch, Timberlake Jr./Sr. High School; second place – Steven Milheim, Potlatch High School; third place – Jamie Haddock, Potlatch High School.
