Achievements: Jonathan Lai attains Eagle rank

Jonathan Lai recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award given in the Boy Scouts. Lai, a member of Troop 208, is a junior at Mt. Spokane High School. For his project Lai built a sign, retaining wall and flower garden at the Spokane Chinese Baptist Church. Lai is the son of Grace and Y.S. Lai of Spokane.

“Three area Girl Scouts have been selected to attend an all-expenses-paid trip to the Get Down to Business Leadership Institute in New York City. Drina Kane, Faith Proctor and Chantel Williams, all of Spokane, are among 30 girls from across the country who will attend the conference focusing on financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

“The following area residents have been named to the spring 2006 dean’s list at Northwest Nazarene University. Eligible students hold a grade-point average of 3.5 or above. Students are listed by their hometown.

Cheney: Ariel Schoenhuth.

Colville: Nathaniel Hanson.

Othello: Courtney Little and Hannah Mohs.

Quincy: Kay Hardiman.

Spokane: Marc Herring and Amanda Merrell.

Spokane Valley: Travis Green.

“Syrone Liu was recently named to the spring dean’s list (with distinction) at Duke University. Liu, a graduate of Mead High School, was ranked in the top 10 percent of all students.

“Four area students were recently named to the spring honor roll at Montana Tech. They are: Adam Hammes of Cheney, Adam Hein of Pullman, Vanessa Murray of Spokane and Jedidiah Sugalski of Spokane. Students must hold a grade-point average of 3.25 or above to be named to the list.

“Barbara Ng of Medical Lake has been awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the Scholarships for Military Children Program. Applicants were required to hold a grade-point average of 3.0 or above, write and essay and be involved in school and community activities.

“Five Spokane Community College auto machinist students have been awarded $1,000 by the Engine Rebuilders Educational Foundation. Ryan Naccarato, Eric Swoboda and Jordan Sykes received scholarships for the 2006-07 school year. Recent graduates K.C. Betz and David Leppert received grants for tools.

“Two area residents recently were awarded the University of Montana President’s Recognition Award. The award is given to graduating seniors who have outstanding academics. The recipients are Chelsea Pennick of Sandpoint and Rob Welsh of Spokane.

“Nicholas Honn has been awarded a $1,000 University Recognition Scholarship for the next academic year at Washington State University. Honn, a 2006 graduate of Central Valley High School, is the son of Linda and Daniel Honn of Spokane Valley.

“Lindsay Clairmont has been awarded an $850 scholarship from the Spokane Regional Council of Beta Sigma Phi. Clairmont is a 2003 graduate of Gonzaga Prep and is a student at Eastern Washington University. She is the daughter of Wayne and Teresa Clairmont of Spokane.

“Four area residents recently graduated from the University of Puget Sound. Meghan Hannes, a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, received degrees in business and mathematics. Natasha Nicolai is a graduate of Northwest Christian. Kristina Thorne is a graduate of Gonzaga Prep. Jesse Zumbro is a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

“Brian Boyer recently graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in political science. Ensign Boyer, a 1999 graduate of Central Valley High School, is the son of Karen and Dave Boyer of Greenacres. He will be stationed in Everett.

“Four area residents recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Air Force Airman Adam Gibson, the son of Mark and Sandra Gibson of Cheney, is a 2004 graduate of Cheney High School.

Air Force Airman Naomi Hubbard, a 2005 graduate of Lind High School, is the daughter of Shari Snelling of Warden, Wash.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Nathanael Komp is the son of Clyde Komp of Spokane.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Richard Armstrong, a 2004 graduate of Moses Lake High School, is the son and stepson of Jackie and Steven Wells of Moses Lake.

“Two area residents recently graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C.

Army Pvt. Ashley Drewer, a 2005 graduate of Colfax High School, is the daughter of Penney Drewer of Endicott, Wash.

Army Pvt. Kenneth Potter, the son of Lori Potter of Spokane, is a 2004 graduate of Contract Based Education.

“Joel Zwainz was recently awarded an Air Force ROTCscholarship. The scholarship covers all tuition and fees plus a $250 monthly stipend. Zwainz, a 2006 graduate of Reardan High School, is the son of Thomas and Wendy Zwainz of Reardan, Wash.

“Spokane Public Schools recently recognized outstanding volunteers at area schools. They were selected for going the extra mile in volunteering at local schools. Each volunteer’s name is followed by the name of the school where he or she volunteers.

The recipients are: Jeff and Sue Belote, Rogers High School; Patti Boudreaux, Adams Elementary; Don Cutler, Holmes Elementary; Robin Fiorillo, Woodridge Elementary; Jacky Herrington, Hamblen Elementary; Patti Johnson, Logan Elementary; Jerry Jones, Grant Elementary; Rick Scott, Pratt Elementary; Tim Shelton, Shadle Park High; Darcy Stirn, Madison Elementary; and Lynne Zysk, Libby Center.

“Community Colleges of Spokane research analyst Janice Eatherton recently received the Washington Staff Training for Technical and Community Colleges Region D Exemplary Staff Award. The award is given to a staff member each year with excellent job performance and dedication to staff development.

“Denise Osei, a counselor and multicultural specialist at the Institute for Extended Learning, recently received an Outstanding Women Leader Award (faculty category) at the Spokane Area Women’s Leadership Conference.

“Lisa Phillips of Spokane recently was named to the spring 2006 dean’s list at the University of Montana. Students must hold a grade-point average of 3.5 or above to be eligible for the list.

“Scott Humphrey of Edwall, Wash., has been selected for a $1,000 National FFA Scholarship. He is a member of the Reardan, Wash., FFA and a recent graduate of Reardan High School.

“Several Spokane Community College Students competed in the National Postsecondary Agricultural Student Organization Competition in St. Louis and several won awards.

Horticulture Specialist-Floriculture: Heidi Apaydin, third place-team; Ginger Gomez, third place-team, third place-individual; Laurie Parrish, first place-team, first place-individual; and Rhonda Nelson, first place-team, fifth place-individual.

Idaho

Dan Robisch of Coeur d’Alene recently graduated summa cum laude with a Master of Science degree in radiological science, medical physics, from the University of Cincinnati. He is a 1977 graduate of Eastern Washington University.
