Hints from Heloise

The Spokesman-Review

Here are two hints from May in Texas:

Leftover hamburger and hot-dog buns: I freeze leftover hamburger buns and hot dog buns to use later as garlic bread.

Freezing cilantro: I use cilantro to cook with but waste a lot. So, I froze the remaining, and now I just pull it out, and it is so much easier to chop.

Dear Heloise: Since it’s almost time again, here’s an easy way to clean out pumpkin pulp. Use a serrated grapefruit spoon. After cutting off the top of the pumpkin, grip the grapefruit spoon with your thumb in the bowl of the spoon and start scraping the inside walls. The serrated spoon makes quick work of a nasty job. – Mette Brown, Huntsville, Ala.

Dear Heloise: To prevent broken yolks when frying eggs, when it’s time to flip the egg, pour a little water into the bottom of the pan and cover it. The top of the egg will cook a bit from the steam, making it stronger, and then it’s safe to flip the egg. – Catherine, via e-mail
