The Slice

Spring break wasn’t just a chance for families with school-age children to take trips.

It was also an opportunity for adults of a certain temperament to compete to see who was most deserving of the title Spokane’s Spring Break Scrooge.

Perhaps there were a few contestants in your workplace or social circle. They’re pretty easy to spot. You just have to listen.

“Spring break? Bah! Why, in my day, children went to school, fathers went to the office and Disneyland was a place that people visited in July.”

“So they got, what, six weeks of snow days and now a week off for spring break, too? What the? Oh, that’s right. I forgot about the sanctity of prebooked travel plans.”

“When did it happen that kids’ schedules came to rule the world? Personally, I blame soccer.”
