Spider-Man the musical opens on Broadway in 2010

Spider-Man has conquered the movies. Now it’s Broadway’s turn.

“Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” will open Feb. 18, 2010, at the Hilton Theatre in New York City.

Producers say the musical, directed by Julie Taymor, will feature a score by U2’s Bono and The Edge. Taymor, the creative force behind Disney’s long-running “Lion King,” will co-write the book with Glen Berger (“Underneath the Lintel”).

The story was inspired by the Marvel comic books hero and will include the story of his origins as well as new material.

There’s no official word on casting, although Evan Rachel Wood has said she will star as Mary Jane, love interest of Peter Parker, the teen who is bitten by a radioactive spider and gains superpowers.

The production, with a reported budget of about $31 million, will begin previews Jan. 16. Tickets go on sale in June.
