Cougars notch first Pac-10 win
Freshman Jazmine Perkins scored 21 points to help the Washington State Cougars earn their first Pacific-10 Conference women’s basketball victory of the season, beating Oregon State 65-52 Thursday night in Pullman.
Perkins was 6 for 11 from the field and 3 of 5 from behind the 3-point line for WSU (8-7, 1-3).
Senior Ebonee Coates had six blocks, tying a WSU record.
Talisa Rhea had 19 points and eight rebounds for Oregon State (10-5, 1-4).
The Beavers outrebounded the Cougars 47-35, but they shot only 31 percent from the field and gave up 24 turnovers. The Cougars shot 40 percent from the field.
Katie Appleton added 14 points for WSU, including hitting two 3-pointers to start the second half.
Oregon 75, Washington 55: Taylor Lilley scored 24 points and Micaela Cocks had 19 as the Ducks (6-9, 3-2) defeated the Huskies in Pac-10 play at Seattle.
Laura McLellan scored 15 points and Sami Whitcomb had 13 for Washington (5-9, 1-3). The Huskies lost their third consecutive game and fifth of six.
Gonzaga 65, Santa Clara 47: Courtney Vandersloot finished with 25 points, five assists and five rebounds while leading the Bulldogs (14-4, 2-0) to a win over the Broncos (2-16, 0-3) in West Coast Conference play at Santa Clara, Calif.
Vandersloot finished 9 of 16 from the floor, including three 3-pointers, and 4 of 4 from the line. Gonzaga shot 21 of 22 from the line to Santa Clara’s 4 for 8.
Heather Bowman and Janelle Bekkering added 12 points apiece for the Zags.
Lena Gipson had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Broncos, who are coached by former GU player and assistant coach Jennifer Mountain.
Northern Colorado 55, Eastern Washington 53: Courtney Stoermer scored 25 points to lead the Bears (8-8, 2-1) to a win over the host Eagles in Big Sky Conference play at Reese Court.
Stoermer finished 7 of 14 from the field, including 4 of 5 on 3-pointers, and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. She added six steals while playing all 40 minutes.
Northern Colorado led 28-20 at halftime after hitting 5 of 8 from long range. The Bears held on in the second half despite shooting 6 of 22 from the floor.
Eastern had a late 7-1 run to trail 54-51 with 1:03 left. Northern Colorado committed a turnover with 30 seconds left, but EWU returned the favor with 11 seconds left.
The Bears scored their final point on a free throw with 8 seconds left.
Nicole Scott led the Eagles (8-10, 3-2) with 11 points before fouling out. Julie Piper added nine rebounds as EWU finished with a 38-21 advantage on the boards.
Wrestling
North Idaho College improved its dual match record to 10-0 with a pair of road wins, 38-18 over Yakima Valley Community College in the afternoon and 40-19 over Highline CC in Des Moines, Wash., in the evening.
Against Yakima, the Cardinals picked up two forfeits and pins by David Hayes (141 pounds), Kammron Jackson (184) and Rudi Burtschi (197).
Burtschi also had a pin against the Thunderbirds. Jeremy Bommarto (149) and Lucas Chesher (157) added pins against Highline.
