In brief: Dispute over cats turns into shooting

A north Spokane man is facing an attempted murder charge after an argument over feline cleanliness led to gunfire that sent a roommate to the hospital, authorities said.

Alan Kintner, 55, was booked into Spokane County Jail late Saturday after deputies took him into custody at his home in the 9500 block of Seven Mile Road, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. The victim, described only as a 44-year-old man, reportedly was in stable condition after being rushed to a Spokane hospital by another roommate. Deputies were dispatched to the scene about 9:15 p.m.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the roommates were watching television when a dispute arose over Kintner’s cats “making messes in the bathroom.” Kintner and one of his roommates began wrestling and kicking at each other. Kintner left the house after getting pinned on his back but returned with a .22-caliber rifle and opened fire, the Sheriff’s Office said. The victim, despite having a bullet wound to his stomach, charged the gunman and knocked the rifle away.

Fire victim, survivor identified

REDMOND, Wash. – The woman whose husband and four sons were killed in a New Year’s Day fire in a Seattle suburb is in stable condition at a nearby hospital, the hospital reported Sunday.

Lilly Resor was being treated at Evergreen Hospital and Medical Center for smoke inhalation and other injuries following the apartment fire in Redmond, said hospital spokeswoman Sherry Grindeland. Resor’s husband, David Thompson, and their four sons were killed in the fire at Sammamish Ridge Apartments.

Grindeland said friends of the family planned to set up a bank account early this week to help Resor with expenses.

Meanwhile, fire and police investigators have not pinpointed the cause of the early morning fire and are not sure when or if they will have an official cause, said Redmond police spokesman Greg Twentey. Investigators returned to the scene on Sunday morning.

No other injuries were reported. Residents of the other 11 apartments in the three-story wooden building were evacuated and found temporary housing.

The fire was reported around 2:30 a.m. Saturday and quickly burned the two units above it. The building is one of a complex of three-story buildings in a wooded area just northwest of downtown Redmond. It is about two miles north of the Microsoft Corp. campus and about 12 miles east of Seattle.
