GU’s Gonzales feted

USA Baseball announced Tuesday that Gonzaga sophomore Marco Gonzales is one of 30 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, presented each year to the nation’s top amateur baseball player. As a pitcher, Gonzales went 8-2 with a 1.55 ERA, ranking 15th in the nation, and threw three complete games. He struck out 92 batters and walked 23 in 92 2/3 innings. As a first baseman, the Fort Collins, Colo., native hit .325 with 10 doubles, two home runs and 29 RBIs. Three finalists will be named Tuesday, and the winner will be announced on MLB Network on July 6.
