TV Notes: Hail to the ‘Veep’; HBO sitcom back for second term

“VEEP” – U.S. Vice President Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is back for another term of screwball politics as this hilarious sitcom returns for its second season. Of course, there are more fires to put out and more dysfunctional Beltway relationships to navigate. And, as usual, Selina finds herself desperately struggling to garner more influence with the chief executive. 10 p.m. Sunday, HBO.

SUNDAY: “Nurse Jackie” returns to find our title character (Edie Falco) suffering from post-divorce doldrums. But, hey, there’s probably a pill for that. 9 p.m., Showtime.
SUNDAY: OK, so maybe the “2013 MTV Movie Awards” aren’t nearly as prestigious as the Academy Awards. On the other hand, Oscar doesn’t have a category for Best Shirtless Performance. 9 p.m., MTV.
SUNDAY: Seedy. Sinful. Evil. Ruthless. Treacherous. Yes, “The Borgias” are back for another scandalous season. Fall to your knees and say your prayers. 10 p.m., Showtime.
MONDAY: Let the game begin. “Defiance” is an epic new sci-fi drama set in 2046, when Earth has been invaded by seven alien races. Even better: The plots connect up with an interactive video game. 9 p.m., Syfy.
MONDAY: Break out the star-spangled spandex. “Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines” traces the evolution of Wonder Woman and other strong female characters, and examines how the depictions through the decades have often reflected societal anxieties about powerful women. 10 p.m., KSPS, KCDT.
TUESDAY: “Deadliest Catch” launches a new season, which means more scenes of manly men braving frigid temperatures and the angry seas, all while we sip our lattes on the couch. 9 p.m., Discovery.
TUESDAY: “Scrubs” vet Donald Faison hosts “Who Gets the Last Laugh?” It’s a reality competition that has three comedians competing against each other to pull the best hidden-camera pranks on unsuspecting victims. 10 p.m., TBS.
WEDNESDAY: The vast forests of Humboldt County are the setting for “Pot Cops.” It’s a new docu-series that follows the Drug Enforcement Unit as it deals with gunfire, booby traps and Mexican cartels. 10 p.m., Discovery.
THURSDAY: What’s better than a new episode of “Parks and Recreation”? Two new episodes of “Parks and Recreation,” served up back-to-back. The TV gods must love us. 9 p.m., NBC.
FRIDAY: OK, let’s try not to freak out the good residents of Portland, but in the latest episode of “Grimm,” a volcano threatens to bury the city in lava. 9 p.m., NBC.
SATURDAY: Hilary Swank and Brenda Blethyn star in the new TV film “Mary and Martha.” It’s the story of two very different women who embark on a journey of self-discovery after traumatic events in Africa bring them together. 8 p.m., HBO.
