Lentil Festival seeks recipes

Organizers are looking for lively lentil recipes for the 20th annual Legendary Lentil Cook-off.

The competition will take place in Pullman Aug. 22 and 23. Entries must be postmarked by June 16.

The top five finalists will prepare their recipes at the legume fest. Dishes will be sampled by celebrity judges and the first 100 fest-goers. The top prize-winner will take home $2,000.

Entries will be judged on ease of preparation, flavor, texture, creativity, and appearance and use of lentils. Recipes must use a half-cup of dry or 1 cup of cooked lentils – and a maximum of 15 ingredients.

Spokane’s downtown cooperative grocery store is one of the newest associate members of the National Cooperative Grocers Association.

With the addition of Main Market and several other grocers, NCGA now serves 142 food co-ops which operate more than 190 storefronts in 38 states. Combined, the co-ops have annual sales of more than $1.6 billion.

NCGA, a business services cooperative founded in 1999, serves retail food co-ops throughout the United States, assisting with marketing, operations and purchasing.

Main Market opened in 2010, serves nearly 1,500 active owners and has annual sales of nearly $2.8 million.

Black Angus Steakhouse

Founded by Washington cattleman Stuart Anderson in 1964, Black Angus Steakhouse is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with new menu items, giveaways and promotions.

There are five locations in Washington, including one in Spokane Valley. Overall, Black Angus has 45 locations in six states. It’s famous for its seasoned, butter-brushed, grilled, aged steaks.

Anniversary specials include seasonal sides like Fresh Grilled Asparagus for spring and Grilled Corn on the Cob for summer as well as Butter Cake with Raspberry Puree Sauce and Rack of Lamb, which will both be available through mid-August.

White Chocolate Bread Pudding with Salted Caramel Sauce was so popular when it debuted in January that it has been added to the menu indefinitely.

Tuesdays, classic cocktails are $5.
