In brief: Suspect arrested in South Hill shooting

Spokane police have arrested an 18-year-old in connection with the shooting of a man near 13th Avenue and Grand Boulevard on Spokane’s South Hill Tuesday night.

Diandre R. Johnson was booked into Spokane County Jail on Wednesday on a charge of first-degree attempted murder. He will make his first appearance in court today. Johnson is known to police, said police spokeswoman Monique Cotton.

The victim entered the 7-Eleven on South Grand shortly before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and told employees that he’d been shot. The wound to his upper back was non-life threatening. He was listed in stable condition at a local hospital Wednesday, said Cotton.

“This is not believed to be a random robbery and assault,” said Cotton. “We do believe Diandre was the shooter.”

Police are still searching for a second person believed to have been involved in the shooting. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.

Affair may be motive in shooting

New information discovered by police points to a possible motive in the shooting death of Christen DeMars last month. Her boyfriend, Cameron D. Keith, is being held in the Spokane County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder.

Her mother told police that she located texts between her daughter and Keith in which DeMars admitted to cheating on Keith. Police took custody of the phone last week and have obtained a search warrant to examine it.

Police responded to the couple’s apartment in Hillyard on March 24 to find DeMars unresponsive and vomiting on the bed. Keith had fled the scene. DeMars later died of a gunshot wound to her abdomen. When Keith was captured by police he denied shooting DeMars, according to court documents.

DeMars’ mother previously told police that Keith was abusive and DeMars was trying to leave him. DeMars had obtained a restraining order against Keith, who is a convicted felon with a history of domestic violence.
