In brief: Carter falls ill, cuts South America trip short

Former President Jimmy Carter returned to the United States from Guyana on Sunday after becoming ill.

A statement released by Carter’s nonprofit foundation, the Carter Center, did not offer much about the 39th president’s condition. It said he “was not feeling well” and needed to return to Atlanta.

Carter, 90, was in the South American country to observe its general election, which is scheduled for today.

Nuclear plant leaks oil into Hudson

BUCHANAN, N.Y. – Part of a New York nuclear power plant remained offline Sunday after a transformer fire created another problem: thousands of gallons of oil leaking into the Hudson River, officials said.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said emergency crews were out on the water near Buchanan trying to contain and clean up transformer fluid that leaked from Indian Point 3.

“There’s no doubt that oil was discharged into the Hudson River,” Cuomo said. “Exactly how much, we don’t know.”

It could be weeks before Indian Point 3 is reopened, said a spokesman for Entergy Corp., the plant owner.

The transformer at the plant about 30 miles north of midtown Manhattan failed Saturday evening, causing a fire that forced the automatic shutdown.

Cuomo revealed Sunday that even after the blaze on the nonnuclear side of the plant was quickly doused, the heat reignited the fire that was again extinguished.

1 dead, 3 hurt after motorcycle event

NEWARK, N.J. – New Jersey authorities say one person is dead and three others are wounded after gunfire broke out following an annual Mother’s Day motorcycle blessing in Newark.

Media outlets report that gunfire erupted Sunday evening in the city’s South Ward, the scene of the Blessing of the Bikes, an event sponsored by the Newark Knights motorcycle club to mark the beginning of the riding season.

Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly said one person died at a hospital after the 7:45 p.m. shooting at a street intersection near the bike clubhouse and three others were being treated for apparently non-life-threatening injuries.
