In brief: King died of strokes linked to diabetes
Las Vegas – Blues legend B.B. King died of a series of small strokes attributable to his long-standing battle with diabetes, his physician and the coroner in Las Vegas said Friday.
The 89-year-old musician, who died late Thursday at home in Las Vegas, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes many years ago.
Dr. Darin Brimhall and Clark County Coroner John Fudenberg said the medical term for the cause of death is multi-infarct dementia, also called vascular dementia.
Brimhall said King’s strokes resulted from reduced blood flow as a consequence of chronic diabetes.
Asian-Americans sue Harvard over quotas
Washington – An alliance of Asian-American groups on Friday filed a federal complaint against Harvard University, saying that school and other Ivy League institutions are using racial quotas to admit students other than high-scoring Asians.
More than 60 Chinese, Indian, Korean and Pakistani groups came together for the complaint, which was filed with the civil rights offices at the Justice and Education departments. They are calling for an investigation and say these schools should stop using racial quotas or racial balancing in admission.
Harvard said its approach to admissions has been found to be “fully compliant with federal law.” Officials also said the number of Asian students admitted increased from 17.6 percent to 21 percent over the last decade.
Students talk teacher into showing ‘Grey’
Romney, W.Va. – Part of the erotic movie “Fifty Shades of Grey” was shown in a West Virginia high school classroom this week after students convinced their teacher to let them watch it as a reward for good work.
The teacher apparently didn’t know what the film was about, according to the Charleston Daily Mail.
Hampshire High Principal Jeff Woofter said the film was shut down after 10 minutes when an assistant principal walked by and saw what they were watching. It was unclear if the students or teacher will face disciplinary action.
