Volleyball roundup: Cougars fall in five to No. 14 Arizona

Washington State’s comeback-bid fell short in a five-set Pac-12 Conference loss to No. 14 Arizona Friday in Pullman. Scores were 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 16-25 and 15-13.

The Cougars had a 10-6 lead in the fifth set, but the Wildcats (13-5, 3-3) scored nine of the next 12 points to secure the win.

Arizona’s Kalei Mau had 21 kills and 11 digs and Penina Snuka added 46 assists and 16 digs. Washington State was led by Kyra Holt, who had 17 kills, 15 digs and four blocks, and McKenna Woodford, who added 16 kills and five blocks.

The Cougars (12-5, 1-4) host Arizona State on Sunday.

Whitworth secures key victory over Willamette

Cassandra Mendoza had 19 kills and Maddye Dinsmore added 46 assists and 14 digs as Whitworth recovered after a first-set loss and beat Willamette in a Northwest Conference match in Spokane. Scores were 17-25, 25-15, 25-23 and 25-16.

The win snapped the Pirates’ three-match losing streak and moved Whitworth to within one game of the Bearcats (10-5, 6-1) in the NWC standings.

Brenna Bruil added 11 kills and three aces for the Pirates (11-6, 5-2), who take on Lewis & Clark tonight at 5.

No. 5 Washington sweeps No. 6 Arizona State

Destiny Julye led a balanced attack with 10 kills and No. 6 Washington swept No. 5 Arizona State 25-6, 28-26, 25-16 in a Pac-12 Conference match in Seattle.

The Huskies’ Bailey Tanner and Katy Beals combined for 35 assists and Cassie Strickland had a match-high 17 digs.

The Sun Devils fell to 15-1 overall and 4-1 in conference matches. Washington (15-1, 5-1) hosts Oregon State on Wednesday.
