CdA’s Long Ear moving to Government Way

The Long Ear, the venerable Coeur d’Alene record store, is relocating later this month.

After 16 years on Fourth Street just south of Appleway, the Long Ear will move about half a mile away, to 1620 N. Government Way. The building housed Phil’s Army and Navy Outdoor store until a couple months ago.

“I think this will be a good move for us,” said Deon Borchard, who owns the Long Ear with her husband, Terry.

In addition to offering more square footage than their current location, the new spot also will be more accessible.

“People have told us over the years they sometimes have a hard time getting to us,” with the heavy traffic on Fourth Street, she said. While Government Way is busy, the new building has driveways from Government Way and Spruce Avenue.

In 2013, the Borchards celebrated 40 years in business. While they started in California, they’ve been a fixture in Coeur d’Alene since 1985.

The current location will close on Feb. 20, and the Borchards hope to open the new location on Feb. 29. In anticipation, sale prices begin on Monday.

The Borchards have started work on the new shop, painting it vibrant colors, and will make room for an expanded clothing section, featuring what Deon Borchard calls “hippie mama” styles and baja hoodies and throwback sweatshirts. They’re also upgrading the wiring in the new place.

“We have a lot of toys that need power,” she said.
