Man shot during family camping trip at Rimrock Lake

YAKIMA, Wash. – A 31-year-old man from the Seattle area was transported to a local hospital early Saturday morning after being shot while on a family camping trip at Rimrock Lake.

Around 2 a.m., the man and family members were awakened by the sound of gunshots. The victim was struck in the chest by gunfire from a nearby hillside, the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release issued late Saturday morning.

Deputies arrived at the scene shortly after and the man was taken to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released after it was determined his injury was not life threatening.

The victim’s name was not released at his request, said Sgt. Mike Russell in a phone interview.

Investigators at the scene checked the hillside and located multiple shell casings as well as a rifle, presumably used to shoot the victim. The rifle had previously been reported stolen during a burglary in Yakima on June 16.

There are no suspects and a motive for the shooting has not been established, officials said. The case remains under investigation.
